๐ Islanders Fans โ Your Blue and Orange Is Waiting!
Calder winner Schaefer, captain Horvat and Sorokin guarding the net have Long Island dreaming again โ dream louder in a fan-inspired Islanders jersey.
The Club
The New York Islanders play at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York โ out by Belmont Park โ in royal blue, orange and white. This is a fan base forged in noise: the Islanders’ faithful are among the most loyal and loudest in the sport, a blue-collar crowd that shows up in all weather and turns their building into a cauldron on rivalry nights. The Isles are New York’s other team by geography only; in their own building, with their own people, they play second fiddle to no one. Searching for a New York Islanders jersey, the latest Islanders schedule or Islanders tickets? Start with the question every fan asks each fall: when do the Islanders play โ because when UBS Arena gets rolling, there is nowhere in the Metro quite like it.
Change is the theme of 2026-27 on Long Island. Peter DeBoer โ hired on April 5, 2026 with four games left in last season, replacing Patrick Roy โ now gets a full campaign to put his stamp on the team. And there is a new letter on the front of the jersey: Bo Horvat has succeeded Anders Lee as captain, with Lee having departed for the Utah Mammoth in free agency. New voice behind the bench, new voice in the room, and a young defenseman who might be the most exciting player the franchise has had in years. The Islanders are not rebuilding. They are reloading โ loudly.

Last Season (2025-26): Close, But April Came Early Again
The Islanders’ 2025-26 season was the kind that leaves a fan base exhausted: good enough to dream, flawed enough to fall short. New York finished 43-34-5 for 91 points, sixth in the Metropolitan Division โ a respectable record that still left them outside the playoff picture for the second straight spring. The end became official on April 12, 2026, with a 4-1 loss in Montreal that slammed the door for good.
The season’s twin stories wrote themselves. On the ice, Mathew Barzal led the team with 72 points, Ilya Sorokin was brilliant enough to finish as the Vezina Trophy runner-up, and the Islanders stayed in the race nearly to the wire โ but “nearly” has become the most frustrating word on Long Island. Off the ice, the organization decided that nearly was not acceptable: with four games remaining, the club moved on from Patrick Roy and turned to DeBoer, a veteran bench boss brought in to squeeze more out of a roster the front office believes should be a playoff team. Ninety-one points would have bought a playoff spot in some springs, in some divisions. In this Metro, it bought an early summer โ and a new head coach.
And yet, buried in a frustrating season was a thunderbolt of hope. Matthew Schaefer, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, did not just meet the hype in his rookie year โ he buried it, winning the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie by a unanimous vote. For a fan base starved for a new face of the franchise, Schaefer’s emergence turned a lost spring into the start of something. The Islanders did not make the playoffs in 2026. But the future walked into the building anyway.
Best Players Right Now (2026-27 Roster)
Bo Horvat, Center (#14) โ The new captain. Horvat takes the C from Anders Lee and brings exactly the two-way, faceoff-winning, lead-by-example game the letter demands. His line does the heavy lifting every night, in every zone.
Mathew Barzal, Center (#13) โ The Islanders’ most gifted playmaker, who led the team with 72 points last season. His edgework and vision break games open. See the honest note below on his start to this season.
Matthew Schaefer, Defense (#48) โ The alternate captain and the 2025 No. 1 overall pick who won the Calder Trophy unanimously as a rookie. Schaefer defends with his feet, attacks with his brain, and has completely changed the temperature around this franchise.
Ilya Sorokin, Goaltender (#30) โ The starter and the Islanders’ great equalizer. Sorokin finished as the Vezina Trophy runner-up in 2025-26, and on his best nights he is simply the best player on the ice for either team.
Ryan Pulock, Defense (#6) โ A heavy, reliable presence on the blue line. Pulock’s booming shot and physical edge give the defense corps its backbone, and he eats the tough minutes that let Schaefer go hunting at the other end.
Kyle Palmieri, Right Wing (#21) โ The alternate captain and a pure Long Island story. Palmieri plays a direct, greasy game โ pucks to the net, bodies in the way, goals from the hard areas โ and his leadership rounds out the letter group.
One honest note: Mathew Barzal (#13) starts the 2026-27 season on injured reserve, so the Islanders’ most creative forward is sidelined for the opening stretch. Getting him healthy and back between the dots is the single biggest swing factor in the Islanders’ season โ the offense has another gear waiting for him.
Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know
Every so often, the first overall pick lands exactly right. Matthew Schaefer arrived on Long Island as the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft with enormous expectations, then spent his rookie season making those expectations look modest: a Calder Trophy won unanimously, a regular spot in the leadership conversation, and an alternate captain’s A on his jersey in year two. Defensemen this young are supposed to learn on the job. Schaefer taught lessons instead. For Islanders fans who have waited years for a true franchise cornerstone to arrive through the draft, Schaefer is the payoff โ and he is only getting started.
The other story is a passing of the torch. Anders Lee’s departure to Utah in free agency closed a chapter; Bo Horvat’s captaincy opens a new one, with a first-year full-season coach in DeBoer preaching structure and accountability. Horvat is not a rah-rah captain โ he is a do-the-job captain, and on a team trying to convert near-misses into playoff berths, that tone matters. His first test wearing the C is leading a roster missing its most creative player, and so far the room has followed him without blinking. The Islanders’ identity for years was grinding out 2-1 wins. The new era wants the same spine with more ceiling. How fast Horvat’s group fuses DeBoer’s system with Schaefer’s electricity will define the winter on Long Island.

This Season (2026-27): Reloading, Not Rebuilding
The early returns say the reload is real. The Islanders opened their home schedule on October 3 by blanking the New Jersey Devils 6-0 at UBS Arena โ a statement win in the building โ and through October 20 they sit at 5-3-1 for 11 points in nine games, third in the Metropolitan Division. They are doing it, notably, without Barzal, which says something about the structure DeBoer has installed and the season Sorokin is putting together in goal โ the kind of goaltending that turns a good structure into standings points.
The winter will test that structure. The Metro is unforgiving: the champion Hurricanes set the standard, the Rangers have started like a house on fire, and the Devils are desperate to bounce back. For the Islanders, the path is clear enough โ keep banking points while Barzal heals, lean on Sorokin and the defense, and let Schaefer keep bending games toward Long Island. Do that, and the two-year playoff drought ends in April. The fans at Belmont have waited long enough to believe the pieces are finally here.
Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch
Check the Islanders schedule and grab Islanders tickets early โ these are the dates that will shape the Islanders’ fall:
- October 3 โ vs New Jersey Devils: Already in the books: a 6-0 shutout of the Devils in the home opener at UBS Arena. A perfect way to open the DeBoer era’s first full season.
- November 5 โ vs Carolina Hurricanes: The defending Stanley Cup champions visit UBS Arena. This is the measuring stick โ the first of four meetings with the champs, and a chance for the Islanders to announce themselves against the best.
- December 20 โ vs New York Rangers: The Battle of New York at UBS Arena, days before the holidays. There is no ticket in the Metro quite like this one when the Rangers come to Elmont.
Biggest Rivalries โ The Wars
1. New York Rangers โ the Battle of New York. City against island, Broadway against Belmont, and generations of families split down the middle. The Rangers already took the October meeting at the Garden; December 20 at UBS Arena is the Islanders’ turn to even the score in front of their own people.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins โ the Metro’s old grudge. Islanders-Penguins has been nasty for decades: playoff wars, superstar eras and buildings that genuinely dislike each other. In a division this tight, these meetings double as four-point swings. Ask any Islanders fan of a certain age: some grudges are inherited, not chosen.
3. Washington Capitals โ no love lost. Another Metropolitan feud with real history and real edge. When Washington comes to Elmont, the games are heavy, the crowds are hostile and the points feel personal.
4. New Jersey Devils โ the other metro fight. Three teams, one metropolitan area, and never enough playoff spots to go around. The Islanders’ 6-0 statement on opening weekend was just the first round of a season-long three-way scrap with the Devils and Rangers.
