The Club

The Tampa Bay Rays are baseball’s great overachievers. Born in 1998 as the Devil Rays — the “Devil” got dropped in 2008, the same year they stunned the sport by reaching the World Series — they play at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, in navy blue and light blue. They’ve never won it all: zero World Series titles, with Fall Classic heartbreak in 2008 and 2020. What they have instead is a reputation. The “opener.” The shifted infields. The bullpen games. Tampa Bay invents it, the rest of baseball copies it — all on one of the smallest payrolls in the sport. And in 2026, the Rays reminded everyone exactly why that formula still works.

Last Season (2026): The Trop Is Back — and So Are the Rays

98-64. First in the AL East. Let that sink in: the Rays won 98 games, their fifth division title and first since 2021, with the best home record in franchise history (55-26). They led the division from June 27 on — 128 days in first place — then clinched on September 22 with a 6-1 thrashing of the Yankees in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, the earliest division clinch in team history. As the No. 1 seed they swept New York 3-0 in the ALDS. And as this guide publishes, they are one win from the World Series, leading the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 in the ALCS with Game 6 tonight at a rocking Tropicana Field.

Best Players Right Now (2027 Roster)

Junior Caminero, 23, Third Baseman (#13) — The face of the franchise. Led the team with 5.7 WAR at 23 years old, and his sixth-inning double in ALCS Game 4 broke Cleveland’s back. The most exciting young Ray since Longoria.

Yandy Díaz, 35, Designated Hitter (#2) — The batting machine. Led the American League with 175 hits, batted .373 with runners in scoring position, and crushed a two-run homer in the ninth inning of that Game 4 win. Ageless.

Chandler Simpson, 25, Left Fielder (#14) — The fastest man in baseball. Hit .306 with zero home runs and led the majors with 46 stolen bases — pure throwback chaos, and the engine of the small-ball attack.

Drew Rasmussen, 31, Starting Pitcher (#57) — The ace. Threw eight shutout innings to win ALDS Game 1, then carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of the division clincher. When the game is biggest, Cash gives him the ball.

Jonathan Aranda, 28, First Baseman (#62) — The on-base machine. Posted a 121 OPS+ and went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the Game 4 ALCS win. Quietly one of the best pure hitters in the league.

Freddy Peralta, 30, Starting Pitcher (#51) — The October revelation. Won ALCS Game 5 in Cleveland 3-1 to put the Rays one win from the pennant. Big-game stuff, bigger moments.

Bryan Baker, 31, Closer — The lockdown artist. Perfect in save chances this October, slamming the door in Game 5. Ninth innings at the Trop have been drama-free.

Taylor Walls, 30, Shortstop (#6) — The glove. A defensive anchor whose bunt single sparked the clinching rally in the Bronx. Does all the little things that win in October.

Cedric Mullins, 32, Center Fielder (#31) — The veteran spark. His eighth-inning solo homer was Tampa Bay’s highlight of the ALCS opener, and he covers acres in center field.

Nick Martinez, 36, Starting Pitcher — The steady hand. Went 5 1/3 strong innings in the Game 4 win, retiring 11 straight at one point. Exactly the kind of savvy arm October demands.

Liam Hicks, 27, Catcher — The clutch backstop. His two-run single broke open ALCS Game 2, and he handles a deep, ever-changing staff with ease.

Richie Palacios, 29, Second Baseman/Outfielder — The Swiss Army knife. Platoons at second, covers the outfield corners, gets on base. Every contender needs one.

Manager: Kevin Cash, 48 (#16) — The longest-tenured skipper in the AL East and the architect of it all. Twelve seasons in, still out-managing payrolls five times the size of his.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

The night the Trop came back to life. April 6, 2026. More than 500 days after Hurricane Milton shredded the roof, a sellout crowd packed a repaired Tropicana Field — new roof, new videoboard, new sound system — and watched the Rays beat the Cubs 6-4. Six days later came a 5-4 walk-off win over the Yankees. After a full season of rain delays at Steinbrenner Field, home finally felt like home again.

The clincher in the Bronx. September 22: second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, one win needed for the division. Rasmussen took a no-hitter into the seventh. Díaz drove in four. Final score: 6-1, and the Bronx watched Tampa Bay celebrate a division title on its own field. Fifth crown in franchise history, earliest clinch ever.

The kids changed the math. Caminero (5.7 WAR at 23) and Simpson (46 steals, zero homers — a stat line from 1985) turned the Rays from plucky to terrifying. When your best player is 23 and your fastest player can’t hit it over the fence but never needs to, the future isn’t coming. It’s already here.

Next Season (2027): Defend the East

Whatever the next few days bring, 2027 starts with a target on Tampa Bay’s back: defending AL East champions, the young core all back, and the Trop rocking again. The rotation (Rasmussen, Peralta, Martinez) is the envy of the division, Caminero only gets better, and Simpson is must-watch television every single night. One cloud on the horizon: the collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, and the owners’ salary-cap push has the sport bracing for a possible lockout. If baseball is played in 2027 — and everyone expects it will be — the Rays open at home with a chance to run it all back. And off the field, the new-ballpark search rolls on, with the club eyeing a new home as early as 2029.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch

Wondering when the Rays play next? The Rays schedule for 2027 is already out — and it opens with a beauty. Grab your Rays tickets early for these:

  • March 25, 2027 — vs Baltimore Orioles (Opening Day, Tropicana Field): All 30 teams play on Opening Day, and the Rays get the Orioles at home. Bunting, sunshine, and the first pitch of the title defense.
  • July 9-11, 2027 — vs Baltimore Orioles (home): Right before the All-Star break, a division series that could decide first place at the halfway mark.
  • July 13, 2027 — All-Star Game (Wrigley Field, Chicago): Expect a heavy Rays contingent — Caminero starting at third base wouldn’t surprise anyone.
  • July 15-18, 2027 — Rivalry Weekend: MLB’s rivalry weekend always hands Tampa Bay the Yankees or Red Sox. Circle it now.
  • Late September 2027 — vs New York Yankees (home, closing stretch): The regular season ends September 26. If the East is close again, the Trop will be the loudest building in baseball.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. New York Yankees — THE war. The payroll gulf, the 2026 ALDS sweep (3-0), the division clinched in their building. This is the rivalry that defines the modern Rays.

2. Boston Red Sox — The other giant. Two big-market bullies, one small-market genius. Tampa Bay keeps finding ways to finish above them anyway.

3. Cleveland Guardians — The fresh war. The 2026 ALCS: five games of bad blood so far, with the pennant on the line at the Trop. Whoever survives this one won’t forget it.

4. Baltimore Orioles — The division grind. They open the 2027 season against each other on March 25. The O’s are young, hungry, and coming for the crown.
