The Minnesota Vikings took the field for the first time in 1961, and purple has run through the Twin Cities ever since. The Vikings play at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis — the gleaming glass ship where the Gjallarhorn sounds and more than 66,000 fans shake the building. This is the franchise of Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page and the Purple People Eaters, of Randy Moss mooning Lambeau and Adrian Peterson’s 2,097-yard season. The Vikings won the 1969 NFL Championship and reached four Super Bowls (IV, VIII, IX and XI) — and lost all four, which somehow only made the bond stronger. When the Vikings play, the whole state stops. Vikings tickets vanish in hours, the Vikings schedule is circled a year in advance, and nothing on Earth looks quite like a sea of purple wearing a Minnesota Vikings jersey under the lights.

Minnesota’s 2025 was a slow-motion heartbreak. The Vikings let Sam Darnold walk — and watched him win the Super Bowl with Seattle — while handing the keys to young J.J. McCarthy. Injuries (ankle, concussion, hand) limited McCarthy to 10 starts, and he managed just 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions as the offense sputtered to a 4-8 start. The playoffs slipped away in Week 15, the general manager was fired in January, and the only consolation was a proud five-game winning streak to close at 9-8 — plus Justin Jefferson grinding out a sixth straight 1,000-yard season even in a lost year, though he found the end zone only twice. The lesson was learned the hard way: this defense was too good to waste. The front office went and got a veteran quarterback.
Best Players Right Now (2026 Roster)
Kyler Murray, QB (#1) — The former No. 1 overall pick and two-time Pro Bowler, signed to a one-year deal in March after Arizona let him go. He beat out McCarthy in camp and was named the starter on August 11 — a dual-threat spark for an offense that needed one.
Justin Jefferson, WR (#18) — The 2024 AP Offensive Player of the Year and the best receiver on the planet. Through five games: 19 catches, 258 yards and already 3 touchdowns — more scores than he managed in all of 2025.
Jordan Addison, WR (#3) — The other half of the league’s most feared receiving duo, stretching defenses so Jefferson can feast underneath.
T.J. Hockenson, TE (#87) — Quietly leads the entire team in receptions (23) — the chain-mover Murray trusts on third down.
Aaron Jones Sr., RB (#33) — The engine of the ground game with 410 rushing yards, keeping the offense on schedule while the passing game gels.
Dallas Turner, EDGE (#15) — The breakout star of the defense: 5.5 sacks in five games after posting 8 as a sophomore in 2025.
Blake Cashman, LB (#51) — A team-high 42 tackles and the heartbeat of the middle of the defense.
Byron Murphy Jr., CB (#7) — Three interceptions already, leading a ball-hawking secondary.
Head coach: Kevin O’Connell — In his fifth season, the noted quarterback whisperer has flipped the script: in 2026, this team wins with defense, the run game and Murray’s legs.
Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know
The quarterback nobody saw coming. A year ago, J.J. McCarthy was the future. Then came a lost 2025, a one-year flier on Kyler Murray — released by Arizona after seven seasons — and a training-camp verdict that shocked the league: Murray the starter, Carson Wentz the backup, and the 2024 first-round pick McCarthy all the way down at QB3. Murray is playing for his career on a one-year deal, and through five weeks the gamble is working.
Jefferson vs. triple coverage. On October 11 in New Orleans, the Saints threw three defenders at Justin Jefferson on one third-quarter play. He caught the touchdown anyway, sealing a 23-13 win. After a maddening 2025 in which the best receiver alive scored just twice, Jefferson is back to breaking games — and breaking coverage schemes drawn up just for him.
Winning ugly is still winning. A 9-3 slugfest in Chicago. A 15-10 rock fight against Miami. This defense ranks No. 1 in the NFL in both EPA per play and DVOA, with Turner, Andrew Van Ginkel and Cashman hunting in packs. The Vikings learned in December 2025 how to win differently — lean on the defense, run the ball, protect the football — and they have carried that identity straight to 5-0.

This Season (2026): Unbeaten — and Just Getting Started
The Vikings are 5-0, alone atop the NFC North and one of only three unbeaten teams left in football, alongside the 49ers and Chiefs. They opened by hanging 39 points on Green Bay, then strangled Chicago, Tampa Bay, Miami and New Orleans with defense. Here is the scary part for the rest of the league: the offense is still gelling. Murray, Jefferson and Addison barely shared the field in September because of bumps and bruises, and Minnesota ranks in the bottom third of the league in yards — yet nobody has beaten them. If the passing game catches up to the defense after the bye, this is a Super Bowl team. A Minnesota Vikings jersey has never been a hotter ticket.
Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch
The Vikings schedule is about to get serious. Grab your Vikings tickets early for these:
- October 25 — vs Indianapolis Colts: Out of the bye and back home under the glass roof, with the unbeaten record on the line.
- November 9 — vs Buffalo Bills (Monday Night Football): Josh Allen and the 5-1 Bills in Minneapolis on a Monday night. The loudest night of the year so far.
- November 15 — at Green Bay Packers: The border battle at Lambeau Field, where the Vikings already own a 39-22 statement win from Week 1.
- November 22 — at San Francisco 49ers (Mexico City, Sunday Night Football): A battle of unbeatens at Estadio Azteca on the international stage. The game of the year, maybe anywhere.
- December 20 — vs Detroit Lions (Sunday Night Football): The division could be decided on this holiday-season night at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Biggest Rivalries — The Wars
1. Green Bay Packers. The border battle, raging since 1961 across more than 125 meetings. Moss, Favre’s homecoming, blocked kicks and frozen December wars — nothing else comes close.
2. Chicago Bears. The NFC North’s oldest grudge. Minnesota and Chicago have been trading bruises for six decades, and a 9-3 win still feels like a masterpiece.
3. Detroit Lions. The division’s new power has made this a genuine war again — two meetings a year, both of them circled in red.
4. New Orleans Saints. The 2009 NFC Championship heartbreak, then the Minneapolis Miracle in January 2018 — Stefon Diggs, the sideline, the noise. This one is personal in both directions.
