The Club

The Miami Marlins are baseball’s great paradox — a franchise with two World Series titles and some of the emptiest October resumes in the sport, all before its 35th birthday. Founded in 1993, the Fish play at loanDepot park in Little Havana, under the retractable roof, in black, teal and blue. And here’s the thing nobody else can say: the Marlins have won the World Series twice — 1997 and 2003 — and both times they did it as the wild card, the underdog, the team nobody picked. The 1997 club, in just its fifth season, remains the fastest expansion team ever to win it all. The 2003 team walked into Yankee Stadium and silenced it. October in Miami is rare — but when it happens, it’s unforgettable.

Last Season (2026): The Kids Took Over

The numbers: 80-82, third in the NL East, 14 games behind the champion Braves, no playoffs. But the numbers lie a little. The 2026 Marlins were one of the hottest teams in baseball in the first half, improved their run differential by 92 runs over the previous year, and hit 168 home runs — their most since 2017. The season ended the way it should have: September 27 at loanDepot park, a 5-3 win over the division-champion Braves, with Sandy Alcantara — who threw the first pitch of the season back in March — recording the save to close it out. Heriberto Hernandez went deep for his team-high 25th homer. It wasn’t October. But for the first time in years, it felt like the start of something.

Best Players Right Now (2027 Roster)

Sandy Alcantara, 31, Starting Pitcher/Closer (#22) — The ace is all the way back. After missing all of 2024 to Tommy John surgery and scuffling to a 5.36 ERA in 2025, Alcantara led all of Major League Baseball with 214 innings in 2026 (13-11, 3.87 ERA, 21 quality starts), then moved to the bullpen in September and converted all three of his save chances. He wants to keep closing — and to finish his career in Miami.

Eury Pérez, 23, Starting Pitcher (#39) — The crown jewel. When healthy, his stuff is as electric as any young arm in baseball. The organization has handled him carefully; 2027 is the year they start letting him loose.

Max Meyer, 27, Starting Pitcher (#23) — The other homegrown arm. Mid-rotation steadiness with swing-and-miss upside, and arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Heriberto Hernandez, 26, Left Field (#13) — The breakout bat. A team-high 25 home runs in 2026, including a 395-foot, 105-mph missile, and he drove in the go-ahead run in the season finale. Middle-of-the-order power the Marlins haven’t had in years.

Griffin Conine, 29, Right Field (#18) — The legacy. Son of “Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine, Griffin homered in the finale and established himself as an everyday big-league outfielder with real pop.

Kyle Stowers, 28, First Base (#28) — The 2025 All-Star keeps producing. A steady left-handed bat and a leader in a very young clubhouse.

Xavier Edwards, 27, Second Base (#9) — The table-setter. Elite contact skills and speed at the top of the order; when he gets on, the offense breathes.

Otto Lopez, 28, Shortstop (#6) — The step forward. Took a big leap in 2026 on both sides of the ball and locked down shortstop.

Joe Mack, 23, Catcher (#80) — The backstop of the future, already here. Seized the starting catcher job in 2026 and never gave it back.

Javier Sanoja, 24, Third Base (#8) — The second-half sensation. Over his final 65 games he slashed .315/.354/.511 with 8 homers and 35 RBIs (3.1 bWAR), and the front office says third base is his to lose in 2027.

Owen Caissie, 24, DH/Outfielder (#17) — The great hope. Acquired from the Cubs in the Edward Cabrera deal, Caissie showed flashes in his first full season (14 HR, 58 RBIs in 108 games) before a lumbar stress reaction ended his year. A healthy 2027 could be his star turn.

Agustín Ramírez, 24, Catcher/First Base (#50) — The power bat off the bench. Can catch, can play first, can change a game with one swing.

Manager: Clayton McCullough, 46 — Back for 2027. The front office announced his return before the offseason even started — continuity for a young roster that finally started winning.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

Sandy threw the first pitch — and the last one. Think about the arc: Opening Day starter in March, MLB innings leader by September, then a move to the bullpen where he saved three games in the final two weeks — including the season finale against the Braves. Two years after Tommy John surgery wiped out his entire 2024 and a 5.36 ERA made people wonder in 2025, Sandy Alcantara is all the way back. The $21 million club option will be picked up before the World Series ends, and for the first time in years, the conversation in Miami isn’t about trading him — it’s about extending him. He wants to finish his career a Marlin.

The kids took over the lineup. Hernandez’s 25 homers. Mack seizing catcher. Lopez’s leap. Sanoja’s scorching second half. Conine, the second-generation Marlin, going deep in the finale. The 2026 Marlins got real contributions from a wave of 23-to-26-year-olds — and the next wave (Cam Cannarella, the reigning minor league player of the year, and 2025 top pick Aiva Arquette) is already knocking. This is the youngest, most talented core Miami has had in a decade.

Two rings, both as the underdog. Never forget what this franchise is in October. The 1997 Marlins won it all in their fifth season — still the fastest ever — on Edgar Renteria’s 11th-inning walk-off single in Game 7. The 2003 Marlins, 88 wins and a wild card, marched into the Bronx and beat the 101-win Yankees, with 23-year-old Josh Beckett throwing a complete-game shutout in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium. When the Marlins get to October, they don’t just show up — they win it.

Next Season (2027): The Leap Year

The foundation is set: Alcantara anchoring the staff, a young lineup with real power, and a manager the front office believes in. President of baseball operations Peter Bendix has been clear about the winter shopping list — a right-handed power bat and veteran pitching help to support the kids, plus possibly a veteran catcher to pair with Mack. The books are clean (no guaranteed contracts on the 2027 payroll), so there’s money to spend if ownership allows it. The honest caveat, same as everywhere: the collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, and a lockout could scramble the whole winter. But if baseball is played on time, the Marlins open 2027 with their most exciting roster in years — and a fan base that finally has something to believe in.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch

Wondering when the Marlins play? The Marlins schedule for 2027 is out, and it starts with a bang — grab your Marlins tickets early for these:

  • March 25 — vs New York Mets (Opening Day, loanDepot park): The earliest Opening Day in MLB history kicks off a six-game homestand — the fifth straight year Miami opens at home. Mets first, then the Phillies March 29-31.
  • March 29-31 — vs Philadelphia Phillies (home): The homestand continues with three against the NL East rival Phillies. Two division series in week one — the tone gets set early.
  • July 13 — All-Star Game (Wrigley Field, Chicago): After 2026’s breakout, expect Miami to be well represented at the Midsummer Classic — Alcantara and Hernandez have strong cases.
  • July 15-18 — Rivalry Weekend: MLB’s rivalry weekend always delivers — the Citrus Series with Tampa Bay or a Braves showdown would both pack loanDepot park.
  • Late September — vs Atlanta Braves (home): Just like 2026, the regular season ends against the Braves (Sept. 26 finale). If the young Fish are in the race, those will be the loudest nights of the year.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. Atlanta Braves — THE war. The NL East kings, the team Miami closed 2026 against, and the team it closes 2027 against. Every Braves series at loanDepot park has an edge — the division runs through Atlanta until someone takes it.

2. New York Mets — Opening Day enemies. The Mets come to town March 25 to start the whole season. NL East blood, big-market swagger, and a rivalry that always delivers drama.

3. Philadelphia Phillies — The division grind. Three games in the opening homestand, then all summer long. The Phillies are never an easy out, and the Marlins measure themselves against them.

4. Tampa Bay Rays — The Citrus Series. Two Florida teams, one state, total bragging rights. The in-state rivalry doesn’t get the national hype — but in Florida, it matters.
