The Club

Chicago Fire Football Club was founded on October 8, 1997 — the 126th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire the club is named for — and wasted no time at all: in their 1998 debut season, the Fire won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup double, still the only expansion side ever to pull it off. Twenty-nine seasons on, the Men in Red remain one of the league’s original standard-bearers.

Home is Soldier Field on the lakefront — capacity 61,500, shared with the Bears — while selected cup and playoff fixtures shift to SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, so it pays to check the Chicago Fire schedule match by match. Owner Joe Mansueto is building the future, too: a new privately funded home, McDonald’s Park, is due to open in 2028, with Carvana already on board as a founding partner.

The rebuild has a name: Gregg Berhalter. The former USMNT coach took over as head coach and director of football in October 2024 and has delivered playoff soccer in both of his seasons — Chicago’s first back-to-back postseason trips in well over a decade. The roster he has assembled, headlined by a certain Polish No. 9, is exactly why the Fire’s 2026 roster is searched as hard as any in MLS.

Is Lewandowski playing? It is the Chicago version of the question America asks about Messi every week — and lately the answer has been yes, and scoring. Add a two-time All-Star on the wing, a homegrown World Cup goalkeeper, and the red Chicago Fire jersey flying out in No. 9, and this is the most relevant Fire squad in a generation.

Last Season (2025): The Drought Ends

Eight years of waiting ended in one wild autumn. Berhalter’s first season turned a perennial bottom-feeder into a playoff team: 8th in the Eastern Conference, 53 points (15W–11L–8D), 68 goals scored and a club-record nine road wins. Hugo Cuypers led the scoring with 17 league goals, and a crowd of 62,358 — the biggest home gate of the season — packed Soldier Field for Inter Miami’s visit in April.

The clincher was unforgettable: a 5–3 win at eventual champions Inter Miami on September 30, 2025, with five different scorers and homegrown Justin Reynolds’ first career goal as the winner, booked the first playoff berth since 2017. Then came the first playoff WIN since 2009 — a 3–1 Wild Card victory over Orlando City at SeatGeek Stadium on October 22. The run ended in Round One against Shield winners Philadelphia, but the message had landed: Chicago belonged again.

Best Players Right Now

Robert Lewandowski — #9, striker. The biggest name ever to wear the shirt. The Poland icon, ex-Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, signed in July 2026 and immediately changed the club’s ceiling — and its crowds: two goals on his home debut in a 2–1 comeback win over Charlotte FC on August 1, six goals and four assists in MLS by mid-October, plus a stoppage-time Leagues Cup winner against Santos Laguna. Under contract through June 2028.

Philip Zinckernagel — #11, right winger. A two-time MLS All-Star and the Fire’s Designated Player on the flank: six goals and ten assists in MLS per the league’s October playoff preview. He scored in the October 6 win over Vancouver and tormented Liga MX sides throughout the Leagues Cup run. Joined in January 2025; signed to 2028.

Maren Haile-Selassie — #7, winger. The team’s top scorer in 2026 with 11 goals and ten assists — including strikes in three straight October league games, the 87th-minute winner against NYCFC among them. The Swiss international has been at the club since 2024 and has quietly become a fan-favorite shirt.

Chris Brady — #1, goalkeeper. Homegrown, from Naperville, Illinois, still only 22 — and now a USMNT goalkeeper who represented the United States at the 2026 World Cup. He anchors the defense and is signed through 2029. The local-hero story of this roster.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi — #4, center-back. The 21-year-old South African international is having what MLS itself calls a Best XI-caliber season, off the back of a breakout 2026 World Cup with South Africa. The defensive signing of the year in Chicago.

Jonathan Bamba — #19, left winger. The Ivory Coast international is DP-level talent on the left — signed in January 2025 through December 2027 — with three league goals, a constant assists threat, and the opening goal in the October 6 win over Vancouver.

Star Spotlight

The night Lewandowski arrived. August 1, 2026: nearly 33,000 at Soldier Field stood to welcome the Polish icon — and he repaid them with two goals in a 2–1 comeback win over Charlotte FC in his first home appearance. The Fire then won five straight in all competitions, the club’s first five-game win streak since 2000. A club that had smoldered for 20 years suddenly felt reignited.

The perfect Leagues Cup run. Chicago became the only MLS team to win all three Phase One matches in Leagues Cup 2026 — 2–0 over Club Necaxa, 2–1 over Cruz Azul, and the signature night: August 10 against Santos Laguna, trailing for an hour before substitutes Zinckernagel and Lod, then Lewandowski in the 90+3rd minute, flipped it to 3–1 at SeatGeek Stadium. Nine points, top of the MLS table, and a quarter-final date with Monterrey to show for it.

The night the drought ended. It started on September 30, 2025 — a wild 5–3 win at Inter Miami, five different scorers, to clinch the club’s first playoff berth since 2017. It peaked three weeks later: October 22, 2025, a 3–1 Wild Card win over Orlando City, Chicago’s first playoff victory since November 2009, in front of a raucous SeatGeek Stadium crowd. Everything about the 2026 Fire is built on those two nights.

This Season (2026): Holding the Top Four

Chicago sit 4th in the Eastern Conference on 48 points from 30 matches (14W–6D–10L), 52 scored and 44 conceded — and the big question is already answered: the playoff spot was sealed on October 18, back-to-back postseasons under Berhalter. With New England 3rd on 52 points, the run-in is not about qualifying anymore. It is about holding the top-four seed, and the home advantage in Round One that comes with it.

The recent form line says the swagger needs recovering: three straight wins — 1–0 at Charlotte (Johan Gómez 58′), 3–1 over Vancouver, a comeback 2–1 over NYCFC — followed by back-to-back losses to direct playoff rivals, 1–3 against Philadelphia and 0–1 at New England. Around it all swirls the summer that changed this club: Lewandowski’s July arrival, the perfect Leagues Cup Phase One, and World Cup breakouts from two of their own — Brady with the United States, Mbokazi with South Africa. Peak at the right time, and the ceiling of this team in November is as high as anyone’s in the East.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. Columbus Crew. The Fire’s oldest MLS enemy — two of the league’s original-era Eastern powers who have been deciding each other’s seasons since 1998. The only league meeting so far in 2026 finished 0–0, a stalemate that settles nothing; the rematch gets the stage it deserves on Decision Day, November 7 in Chicago, with seeding on the line for both. Chicago’s six major trophies all predate the Crew’s modern dynasty — the Fire are chasing that standard again for the first time in years.

2. FC Cincinnati. The modern Midwest war: two ambitious climbers fighting for the same region, the same recruits and the same “next big thing in the East” label. The 2026 series delivered two classics — a 3–3 draw at TQL Stadium on April 18, then a 3–2 Cincinnati win in Chicago on May 3. Both clubs made the 2025 playoffs; both are back in 2026. This fixture is now the measuring stick, every single year.

3. St. Louis CITY SC. The newest grudge and the fastest-growing: an all-sports city rivalry — Cubs–Cardinals energy — transplanted to MLS since CITY arrived in 2023, with big traveling support both ways. St. Louis edged the 2026 meeting 2–1 on April 30, and their run to the top of the West, capped by the 2026 U.S. Open Cup title on October 21, has only raised the stakes for Fire fans.
