The Club

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of baseball’s oldest and loudest franchises. Founded in 1883, the Phils play at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia, dressed in red and white with blue accents, and they own two World Series titles — 1980 and 2008. This is the franchise of Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, the 1993 “Macho Row,” and the 2008 parade down Broad Street that an entire generation of fans still talks about like it was yesterday. Phillies fans are famously demanding — they booed Santa Claus once, and they’ll tell you about it proudly — but nobody loves harder when the team gives them October baseball. And for five straight years now, this team has.

Last Season (2026): From 9-19 to the Brink

The final line: 88-74, second in the NL East, six games behind the Atlanta Braves — and a fifth consecutive trip to the postseason. But the record doesn’t tell the story. The Phillies opened the season 9-19, a disaster so complete that manager Rob Thomson was fired on April 28 after five seasons. Bench coach Don Mattingly took over as interim manager, and just like Thomson had done taking over for Joe Girardi in 2022, Mattingly turned the season around: 79-55 (.590) the rest of the way. Philadelphia clawed all the way back to clinch a wild-card berth on the final day of the regular season — Game 162 — then headed to Atlanta for a National League Wild Card Series against the division-champion Braves. It was a classic: the Phillies dropped Game 1, 5-3, when Austin Riley hit a three-run homer in the eighth off closer Jhoan Duran; then came one of the great nights in recent franchise history, a 4-3 win in 10 innings in Game 2 on back-to-back eighth-inning homers by Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber and a walk-off solo shot by Alec Bohm, with rookie Andrew Painter slamming the door over the final three frames. But the magic ran out in Game 3: Michael Harris II hit a three-run homer in the first inning, the Phillies went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, and the season ended 6-2. The fourth straight elimination-game loss. The end of a four-year streak of reaching at least the NLDS. And an offense that finished 19th in the majors in runs scored left everyone in Philadelphia asking the same question all winter: where did the thunder go?

Best Players Right Now (2027 Roster)

Bryce Harper, 34, First Base (#3) — The face of the franchise. Twenty-nine homers in 2026, the heroics of Game 2 in Atlanta, and now — after the great infield shuffle of last summer — back at first base full-time where he belongs. The Phillies go as Harper goes.

Kyle Schwarber, 33, Designated Hitter (#12) — The thunder. Led the club with 45 home runs and 97 RBIs, and his eighth-inning blast in Game 2 will live in highlight reels forever. He’ll even spell Harper at first base for around 30 games in 2027.

Trea Turner, 33, Shortstop (#7) — The constant. Nineteen homers and 21 steals, the only infielder who never moved during the deadline shuffle — but the front office has told him plainly his defense at short must be better in 2027.

Alec Bohm, 30, Third Base (#28) — The walk-off hero of Game 2, and a 15-homer, 88-RBI season. He hits free agency this winter, so every at-bat in a Phillies jersey from here on is an audition — for Philadelphia or someone else.

Bryson Stott, 29, Second Base (#5) — The Swiss Army knife who got moved to third base for two months, then moved right back. Twenty-seven steals and Gold Glove-caliber defense wherever they put him.

J.T. Realmuto, 35, Catcher (#10) — The best catcher in baseball, still. Handles a deep staff, controls the running game, and remains the quiet backbone of everything the Phillies do.

Cristopher Sánchez, 29, Starting Pitcher (#61) — The ace now. Eighteen wins and 231 strikeouts in 2026 — the breakout that turned a good rotation into a great one.

Jesús Luzardo, 29, Starting Pitcher (#44) — The co-ace. Fourteen wins and 221 strikeouts of high-octane left-handed stuff; on his day, unhittable.

Zack Wheeler, 36, Starting Pitcher (#45) — The veteran lion. Fourteen more wins and 193 strikeouts. He isn’t the youngest arm in the room anymore, but he’s still the one you want in Game 1.

Aaron Nola, 33, Starting Pitcher (#27) — The workhorse. Takes the ball every fifth day, eats innings, and has been doing it in Philadelphia for over a decade.

Andrew Painter, 23, Starting Pitcher (#24) — The future, arriving early. The prized rookie threw the final three innings of the Game 2 classic in Atlanta — the kind of October debut legends are made of.

Jhoan Duran, 28, Closer (#59) — The fireman. Thirty-three saves of triple-digit heat. Game 1 in Atlanta stung, but closers with his stuff don’t stay down long.

Brandon Marsh, 28, Outfielder (#16) — The fan favorite with the flowing hair and the all-out play. Energy you can’t teach.

Justin Crawford, 22, Center Field (#2) — The rookie burner. Seventeen steals and elite range in center — the next wave is already here.

Manager: Don Mattingly (#8) — First full season. The interim tag is gone — a two-year deal, signed October 14 — after he took a 9-19 team to 79-55 and October. Now the job is his, and so are the expectations.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

Game 2: the night the Bank’s magic traveled south. Down 3-1 in the eighth inning of an elimination game in Atlanta, the season 12 outs from over — then Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber hit back-to-back home runs to tie it, Alec Bohm won it with a solo shot in the 10th, and 23-year-old Andrew Painter closed it out. For one night, it was 2022 all over again. Phillies fans will be telling their grandkids about that eighth inning.

From 9-19 to 79-55: the Mattingly turnaround. When Rob Thomson was fired on April 28 with the Phillies buried at 9-19, the season looked lost. Don Mattingly — the former Yankees captain, the hitting savant — steadied the clubhouse and went 79-55 the rest of the way, a .590 clip that would win 95 games over a full season. It earned him the full-time job. In Philadelphia, where managers get eaten alive, that’s as strong a vote of confidence as it gets.

The great infield shuffle. At the trade deadline, the Phillies acquired Luis Arraez and rearranged everything: Bryson Stott to third, Alec Bohm to first, Bryce Harper to right field — his old position, played only in stretches. It was bold, it was messy, and it didn’t quite work (Arraez’s bat faded and an ankle sprain kept him off the Wild Card roster). This winter, sanity prevailed: Harper is back at first base full-time, Schwarber will moonlight there, and Arraez, Bohm and Edmundo Sosa all face free agency. The 2027 infield could look very different — and that’s the point.

Next Season (2027): Red October, Reloaded

The core is back and the manager finally has a full spring training: Harper at first, Schwarber mashing, Sánchez and Luzardo fronting a rotation that can match anyone’s. But the questions are real. The offense finished 19th in runs scored, and the men who coached the hitters — Kevin Long and Bobby Dickerson — were fired days after the season ended. The infield has three free agents. Trea Turner has been told his shortstop defense must improve. And the division isn’t waiting: the Braves just won it and ended Philadelphia’s season, and the Mets are coming. The good news? The Phillies open with six straight against NL East foes they should beat, 15 of their 24 September games are at Citizens Bank Park, and this roster has been to October five straight years — they know the road. One cloud hangs over everything: the collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, and the sport is bracing for a possible lockout. If the games go on as scheduled, expect the Phillies to be right back in the thick of it — and expect the Bank to be shaking.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch

Wondering when the Phillies play? The Phillies schedule for 2027 is already out — and it opens on the road against a division rival. Grab your Phillies tickets early for these:

  • March 25 — at Washington Nationals (Opening Day): All 30 teams play on Opening Day, and the Phillies open with three in D.C. — a soft landing before the home opener.
  • April 1 — vs Washington Nationals (home opener, Citizens Bank Park): The first game at the Bank in 2027, opening a seven-game homestand. Nothing beats an opener in South Philly.
  • April 20-22 — vs Los Angeles Dodgers (home): The team that knocked Philadelphia out of the 2025 NLDS comes to town. Early-season measuring stick, playoff atmosphere guaranteed.
  • May 4-6 — vs New York Mets (home): The rivalry series at the Bank, right before a brutal back-to-back road trip through New York (Mets, then Yankees May 14-16). This stretch will tell us who runs the NL East.
  • July 4 — vs Seattle Mariners (home): Independence Day baseball at Citizens Bank Park. Fireworks on the field, fireworks after — the best holiday date on the calendar.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. New York Mets — THE war. The division blood feud that never cools. They meet at the Bank May 4-6, then the Phillies head straight into Queens and the Bronx — the season’s defining two weeks.

2. Atlanta Braves — the fresh wound. They took the 2026 division, then ended Philadelphia’s season in the Wild Card round. The Phillies had owned this matchup in October (2022, 2023) — now the debt runs the other way.

3. Washington Nationals — the opener. Six games to start 2027, home opener included. The Nats are rebuilding, but division games in March count the same as ones in September.

4. Los Angeles Dodgers — the October standard. They bounced the Phillies from the 2025 NLDS in four games and just beat Toronto in a seven-game World Series classic the year before. April 20-22 is circled as the rematch.
