The Club

D.C. United are MLS royalty: a charter club founded on June 15, 1994, first season 1996 — and the league’s first dynasty, winners of MLS Cups in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2004. The Black-and-Red, the Eagles, owned by D.C. United Holdings under co-chairmen Jason Levien and Stephen Kaplan, own a trophy cabinet that includes four Supporters’ Shields, three U.S. Open Cups, the 1998 Concacaf Champions’ Cup and the 1998 Copa Interamericana. The standards at this club were set by giants, and everyone in Washington knows it.

Home is Audi Field, the club’s soccer-specific stadium in Washington, D.C., opened in 2018 with a capacity of 20,000 — steep, loud, and the stage the rebuild has to conquer.

On the touchline, stability at last: René Weiler, the Swiss coach hired after the club cleaned house following the disastrous 2025 campaign, is in his first full season in charge in 2026 — and unlike so many recent D.C. seasons, there has been no mid-season change. One coach, one plan, one direction.

Search “d.c. united roster” and you find two club-record-style DP signings. Search “d.c. united schedule” and you find four finals in a row. And search “d.c. united jersey” and you meet the 2026 Black-and-Red Kit: plain black, no-nonsense, Guidehouse across the chest — and the detail fans love, sleeve cuffs in red-and-black stripes with “D.C. United” and three stars woven into the band. A fan-inspired shirt carrying the badge’s history on its sleeves, literally.

Last Season (2025): Rock Bottom

There is no softer way to write it: 2025 was the worst season in D.C. United’s history. The Black-and-Red finished 15th — last — in the Eastern Conference and 30th overall, with 26 points from five wins, 11 draws and 18 defeats, 30 goals scored and 66 conceded. It was a sixth straight season without the playoffs, a club-record drought, for the league’s first dynasty. Head coach Troy Lesesne was sacked midseason; general manager Ally Mackay was fired at season’s end. The only bright spot was an Open Cup run to the quarterfinals, ended by eventual champions Nashville.

Christian Benteke’s nine league goals topped the scoring chart of a team that could not score. He headlined the winter clear-out, and what followed was the hard reset the fanbase had demanded: Weiler in the dugout, a new front office, and two Designated Player signings meant to do one thing above all — end the drought in 2026.

Best Players Right Now

Tai Baribo — #9, striker. The signing of the rebuild. A Designated Player brought from the Philadelphia Union on December 17, 2025 for a reported $4.0 million, Baribo leads the team with 16 league goals, including four game-winners and a perfect five-for-five record from the penalty spot. His hat trick at the Red Bulls in April dragged D.C. to a wild 4–4 draw — the night the $4 million man announced himself.

Louis Munteanu — #11, striker. The biggest fee of the rebuild: a Designated Player signed from CFR Cluj on January 5, 2026 for a reported $7.0 million. The Romanian international has six league goals in his first MLS season, though a lower-leg injury has sidelined him during parts of the October run-in — his brace in the 2–0 win at NYCFC in May showed exactly what D.C. bought.

Peglow — #7, forward. The Brazilian is the attack’s chief creator. His assist on Kimito Nono’s goal at Cincinnati on October 21 was his sixth of the season, and it was Peglow who teed up Baribo’s winner on opening day against Philadelphia back in February. When D.C. break teams down, the ball usually passes through No. 7 last.

Keisuke Kurokawa — #6, left-back. A set-piece weapon signed on a free from Gamba Osaka on December 30, 2025. Kurokawa has started all 29 of the club’s matches through mid-October, leads the team with six assists, and has personally taken a remarkable 75 corner kicks. D.C.’s offense runs through his left foot as much as anyone’s — from left-back.

Kimito Nono — #2, winger. The summer spark, signed from Kashima Antlers on July 29, 2026. Nono scored a brace in the 3–3 draw at Vancouver on September 26 and D.C.’s goal in the 1–2 loss at Cincinnati on October 21 — his third for the club, and another sign that the summer business was aimed at exactly these moments.

Jackson Hopkins — #25, midfielder. The homegrown heartbeat of Weiler’s midfield: a first-choice starter all season and a scorer in the famous 4–4 at the Red Bulls in April. In a squad rebuilt with record fees, the academy product holding his place tells you plenty about his ceiling.

Star Spotlight

The 4–4 classic. April 22, 2026, at Sports Illustrated Stadium: Tai Baribo scored a hat trick as D.C. rallied for a wild 4–4 draw with the New York Red Bulls, Jackson Hopkins adding the fourth. Julian Hall, Ronny Donkor and a Jorge Ruvalcaba strike had New York dreaming; Baribo had other ideas. One of the games of the MLS season — and the night the rest of the league learned the rebuild had teeth.

The Atlantic Cup comes home. October 14, 2026: D.C. United 2–1 New York Red Bulls at Audi Field. Baribo converted a fifth-minute penalty, Silvan Hefti headed the winner in first-half stoppage time, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s 71st-minute reply was not enough. The result captured the Atlantic Cup for the first time since 2021 — the single biggest night of the Weiler era so far, against the oldest enemy there is.

Opening-day statement. February 21, 2026, the first day of the rebuild: D.C. beat the Philadelphia Union — the 2025 Supporters’ Shield winners — 1–0 at Audi Field, Baribo scoring from a Peglow assist. A wooden-spoon team beating the Shield holders in Week 1 set the tone for everything that followed: this is no longer the 2025 D.C. United.

This Season (2026): The Rebuild Takes Hold

Read the table honestly: D.C. sit 13th in the Eastern Conference on 33 points — seven wins, 12 draws, 11 defeats, 38 scored, 53 conceded. Then read the race honestly: with four games left, the Black-and-Red are mathematically alive, three points behind the New York Red Bulls in the final Wild Card spot, with 8th-place Cincinnati six points up the road. The equation is brutal — likely win out and get help — but a team that finished dead last twelve months ago is playing meaningful football in late October, and nobody at Audi Field is apologizing for the drama.

The recent form is a rollercoaster with the safety bar rattling: a 3–3 draw at Vancouver powered by Nono’s brace, a 0–4 humbling at Inter Miami, the 2–1 Atlantic Cup win over the Red Bulls, a 1–4 defeat at Orlando, and a narrow 1–2 loss at Cincinnati on October 21. The Open Cup ended early — a 3–3 draw with One Knoxville at Audi Field on April 15, lost in a 5–6 shootout — but the summer business kept adding goals to what was the league’s second-lowest-scoring attack: Nathan Ordaz arrived from LAFC on July 13 for a reported $2.375 million, and Kimito Nono signed from Kashima Antlers on July 29 and has been scoring in big spots ever since. Every remaining game is a final. Treat them that way.

Mark Your Calendar

Saturday, October 24, 2026 — vs FC Cincinnati, Audi Field (7:30 p.m. ET). Three days after losing 1–2 in Cincinnati, D.C. get the rematch at home. A must-win against the 8th-place side they are chasing — the race, in one night.

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 — at Toronto FC, BMO Field (7:30 p.m. ET). A midweek trip north where anything less than three points probably ends the dream.

Saturday, October 31, 2026 — at Columbus Crew, ScottsMiracle-Gro Field (2:00 p.m. ET). Two desperate teams, one playoff line: the Crew are chasing the same Wild Card air, which makes this the nastiest fixture left on the calendar.

Saturday, November 7, 2026 — vs New York City FC, Audi Field (7:30 p.m. ET). Decision Day. The final day of the regular season, at home, against the other New York club — with D.C.’s playoff life potentially on the line for ninety minutes.

November 18, 2026 — the Wild Card, then Round One, November 20 – December 2. If the great escape lands, D.C. enter as a low seed and any run starts with the single-game Wild Card on Wednesday, November 18. Conference semifinals follow December 5–6, conference finals December 11–12, and MLS Cup 2026 lands on Friday, December 18. Every match streams on Apple TV with MLS Season Pass.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. New York Red Bulls — the Atlantic Cup. The oldest rivalry in MLS, dating to the league’s first season in 1996 — 112 meetings all-time as of October 14, 2026, with D.C. ahead 48 wins to 43, and 21 draws. The 2026 chapters were classics: the 4–4 thriller at Sports Illustrated Stadium in April, Baribo’s hat trick and all — then the 2–1 win at Audi Field on October 14, Baribo’s early penalty and Hefti’s stoppage-time header, which brought the Atlantic Cup back to Washington for the first time since 2021. These two contested some of the league’s earliest classics, and the fire has never gone out.

2. Philadelphia Union — the I-95 rivalry. The recent history here has been one-sided — Philadelphia 25 wins, 16 draws, D.C. 12 across the all-time series — which is exactly why 2026 felt like a corner turned. D.C. beat the reigning Shield winners 1–0 at Audi Field on opening day, Baribo finishing Peglow’s assist, then ground out a 0–0 at Subaru Park in April. One win, one draw: D.C.’s best season against Philly in years, and a debt the fanbase wants fully repaid.

3. New York City FC. The other New York feud, growing since NYCFC entered MLS in 2015. D.C. won this year’s first meeting 2–0 at Yankee Stadium on May 3 — one of only two 2–0 wins all season, the club’s biggest winning margin, powered by a Louis Munteanu brace. The rematch is the biggest game left on the calendar: Decision Day, November 7, at Audi Field, with everything potentially riding on it.
