The Club

The Detroit Lions were founded in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans in Ohio, moved to Detroit in 1934, and have played at raucous Ford Field in downtown Detroit since 2002, in Honolulu blue and silver. This is a fan base that has waited generations and never gone quiet — the “One Pride” that hosts the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day institution, a Lions home game staged since 1934. The franchise was built by legends like Barry Sanders, the most elusive runner the game has ever seen, and Calvin “Megatron” Johnson. Detroit has won four NFL championships — 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957 — all before the Super Bowl era. The Super Bowl itself has never seen Detroit; the closest calls were the NFC Championship Games of 1991 and 2023, when a 34-31 loss at San Francisco broke a city’s heart. Searching for a Detroit Lions jersey, the latest Lions schedule or Lions tickets? Start with the question every fan asks each fall: when do the Lions play — because in Detroit, game day is personal.

Last Season (2025): One Step Back

Detroit’s 2025 season was the hangover after the 15-2 magic of 2024: a 9-8 record and a January watching the playoffs on television — the Lions’ first postseason absence since 2022. The offense was never the problem, finishing fifth in scoring at 28.3 points a game, with Jahmyr Gibbs piling up 17 total touchdowns. But a 7-4 start rotted away as injuries hit, and in the strongest division in football there was no margin for a stumble. Dan Campbell took over play-calling himself midseason and still could not save it. Offensive coordinator John Morton was fired in January, and Campbell turned to Drew Petzing to run the offense in 2026.

Best Players Right Now (2026 Roster)

Amon-Ra St. Brown, Wide Receiver (#14) — “The Sun God” is the heartbeat of this team. A fourth-round pick who plays like a first-rounder on every snap, he leads the receiving room again in 2026.

Jahmyr Gibbs, Running Back (#0) — The most explosive player on the roster. Through five games of 2026: 504 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns, plus 243 receiving yards and two more scores.

Jared Goff, Quarterback (#16) — The steadiest hand in the NFC North: 1,485 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and zero interceptions through five games, and the best football of his career at 31.

Jameson Williams, Wide Receiver (#1) — The field-stretcher. His pure speed forces defenses to defend every blade of grass and opens the field for everyone else.

Sam LaPorta, Tight End (#87) — A Pro Bowl-caliber tight end and Goff’s chains-mover over the middle.

Penei Sewell, Right Tackle (#58) — The best offensive lineman in football on most Sundays, and the tone-setter for the “grit” identity.

Aidan Hutchinson, Defensive End (#97) — The Michigan man is the face of a pass rush that leads the entire NFL in sacks through five weeks, with 20 quarterback takedowns.

Jack Campbell, Linebacker (#46) — The defensive signal-caller, a first-round pick now running Kelvin Sheppard’s defense.

Head coach: Dan Campbell — A former Lions tight end in his sixth season in charge. Campbell took over a 3-13-1 rebuild and turned it into a perennial contender; in Detroit, the coach is as much the franchise’s identity as any player.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

Gibbs, alone at last. For two seasons Jahmyr Gibbs shared the backfield in the beloved “Sonic and Knuckles” pairing. With David Montgomery gone, 2026 is the first year the offense runs entirely through #0 — and he has answered with 747 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns in five games. The debate about whether he is the best running back in football has started.

The strangest team in football. Detroit is tied for the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL at 32.8 points a game — while fielding the league’s leakiest total defense, giving up 404.4 yards a game. Yet that same defense leads the NFL in sacks. Every Lions game is a shootout, and the season turns on whether the pass rush can keep bailing out the secondary.

Goff’s zero. Five games, 12 touchdowns, zero interceptions. The quarterback Detroit supposedly took as a “bridge” in the Matthew Stafford trade has become the most careful gunslinger in the league. If the Lions finally break the Super Bowl duck, it will be with #16 under center.

This Season (2026): Shootouts and a Four-Team War

Detroit comes off its bye at 3-2 — fourth in the NFC North yet holding the NFC’s No. 7 seed, the final Wild Card spot, because the North is the deepest division in football: Minnesota is 5-0, Chicago 5-2, Green Bay 4-2, and every team is above .500. The Lions beat the Saints in overtime, the Jets and the Cardinals — hanging 45 points on Arizona — around losses at Buffalo and Carolina, and they are unbeaten at home. Now comes the real season: 12 straight games to the finish, starting with back-to-back home division games against the Packers and the unbeaten Vikings. Win those two and the North is a four-team brawl; lose them and Detroit is chasing a Wild Card from the back of the pack.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch

Check the Lions schedule and grab Lions tickets early — these are the nights that will decide the North:

  • October 25 — vs Green Bay Packers: Division play opens with a revenge game at Ford Field. Green Bay swept Detroit in 2025 — the winner takes a real grip on the North race.
  • November 1 — vs Minnesota Vikings: The unbeaten division leaders come to town, and Detroit debuts its white “Defend the Den” Rivalries uniform for the occasion.
  • November 15 — vs New England Patriots (Munich, Germany): Detroit’s international showcase — a designated home game against the Super Bowl LX runners-up at Allianz Arena, 9:30 AM ET.
  • November 26 — vs Chicago Bears (Thanksgiving Day): The signature fixture, hosted by Detroit since 1934 — against a 5-2 Bears team coached by Ben Johnson, the man who built this offense.
  • December 20 — at Minnesota Vikings (Sunday Night Football): The return game in Minneapolis, in primetime, with the division likely on the line.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. Green Bay Packers — the war for the North. Played since 1930, one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL. Green Bay owned Detroit for decades; Campbell’s Lions flipped the script in 2023 and 2024, then the Packers swept both meetings in 2025. October 25 at Ford Field is the first chance to take the crown back — with a Week 18 rematch at Lambeau to close the season.

2. Chicago Bears — the Thanksgiving feud. Rivals since 1930, back when Detroit was still the Spartans. Detroit hosts Chicago on Thanksgiving Day 2026, and the Bears now arrive coached by Ben Johnson, the coordinator who built Detroit’s modern attack before leaving in 2025. Two meetings — November 26 and January 3 — with bad blood on both sidelines.

3. Minnesota Vikings — the new measuring stick. The Vikings are the North’s last unbeaten team at 5-0, with the division’s best defense. Detroit’s season turns on the two meetings: November 1 at Ford Field and the December 20 Sunday-night return in Minneapolis.

4. Buffalo Bills — the growing grudge. A cross-conference needle that keeps sharpening: Buffalo’s 41-31 Thursday-night shootout win in Week 2 is the kind of loss that sticks. If these two meet again, it will be in February — and Detroit would take that deal today.
