The Club

Tacoma Defiance is the reserve team of MLS club Seattle Sounders FC — founded on October 14, 2014 as Seattle Sounders FC 2 and launched in USL Pro in 2015. The side moved to Cheney Stadium in Tacoma in 2018, and on January 30, 2019 took the name it carries today: Tacoma Defiance, chosen by a public poll, drawn from Point Defiance Park and Tacoma civic pride. When MLS NEXT Pro launched in 2022, the Defiance joined as a founding member and returned to Tukwila — and the crest tells the story: a ship based on USS Point Defiance, wrapped in the tentacles of a Giant Pacific octopus. The club’s tertiary mark says it plainly: “Defiantly Tacoma.”

Home is Starfire Stadium, in the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington — the Sounders’ longtime training ground, capacity 4,500, S2’s original home from 2015 to 2017 and the Defiance’s home again since 2022. Its job is the most honest in American soccer: produce Sounders. This is a founding reserve side still chasing its first trophy — no league title, no cup — with conference semifinal runs in 2022 and 2024 and 2nd-place Western Conference finishes in 2022 and 2023 as the high-water marks.

The man in the dugout is Paulo Nagamura, appointed in February 2026 as the sixth head coach in S2/Defiance history. The former MLS midfielder previously coached Sporting KC II and the Houston Dynamo first team, and his assistant is a name Starfire knows by heart: João Paulo, the former Sounders midfielder who retired as a player after 2025 and moved straight onto the Defiance staff. Nagamura’s brief was a rebuild with a backbone.

And then there is the shirt. Ask anyone searching for the Tacoma Defiance jersey in 2026 and they will describe the same thing: a black adidas shirt with one large sweeping green wave across the front — thick curved bands with fine line shading, running diagonally from the left chest to the right hem — white adidas stripes over the shoulders, the circular Defiance crest over the heart, no front sponsor, and white name-and-number print on the black back. Fan-inspired apparel, and one of the boldest looks in MLS NEXT Pro.

Last Season (2025): The Most Entertaining Bad Team in the West

Year three in MLS NEXT Pro split clean in two. Tacoma finished 12th in the Western Conference on 36 points — 10 wins, 4 draws, 14 losses — and missed the playoffs for the first time since joining the league, five points short. The numbers were absurd: 62 goals scored, the most in the Western Conference, and 67 conceded, tied for the most in the conference. An early 8-1-0 run across all competitions, outscoring opponents 27–13, gave way to 12 points from the final 17 matches.

The season broke at the top. Head coach Hervé Diese, in charge since 2024, was let go on July 23, 2025 with the team 11th in the West — days after a 6–4 home loss to Colorado Rapids 2 in which Tacoma led 3–0 at half-time and 4–2 in the 70th minute. It was the first midseason coaching change in club history; longtime assistant Michael Morris took over as interim. The famous night of 2025 came in the U.S. Open Cup: standing in for the Sounders organization, the Defiance won three straight at Starfire, capped by a 2–1 extra-time win over USL Championship side Oakland Roots SC on April 16, 2025 — Osaze De Rosario’s winner, ten men holding on — before the run ended in the Round of 32, a 3–2 loss to Portland’s MLS first team. Tsukanome finished as top scorer with a new club single-season record, De Rosario added 10 league goals and two cup goals, and the finale said everything about this club’s spite: already eliminated, Tacoma beat Houston Dynamo 2 5–1 on October 5, 2025, braces from both men knocking Houston out of the playoff race — the third time in four years the Defiance effectively ended Dynamo 2’s season. Nagamura’s rebuild started from there.

Best Players Right Now

Mark Bronnik — #81, forward. The breakout story of Tacoma’s season. The 19-year-old striker, signed ahead of 2026, announced himself with the 85th-minute equalizer in the March 1 opener against LAFC 2, never gave the No. 9 role back, and finished as the team’s top scorer with 13 league goals plus 4 assists. The club’s own site ran the headline: “Mark Bronnik’s breakout season is powering Tacoma Defiance’s playoff push.”

Charlie Gaffney — #84, right wingback. The Academy product who became the creative engine from the back. Gaffney set a club record for regular-season assists — 8 in league play — then added two more in the play-in at San Jose to reach 10 in all competitions, alongside 3 goals. His 50th-minute Decision Day goal against Timbers2 put Tacoma in the playoffs, and FotMob rated him the team’s standout performer of the season.

Rafael Jauregui — #42, winger. The 21-year-old newcomer who saved his best for last: 2 goals and 6 assists in the regular season, third in overall production for the Defiance — and then both Tacoma goals in the 4–4 play-in epic at San Jose on October 11, playing the full extra time. Local coverage calls him an unsung hero — on the biggest night of the year, he was the hero anyway.

Mark O’Neill — #40, center-back. The rock of Nagamura’s defensive reset: a FotMob rating of 7.19, the team’s second-best mark of the season, anchoring a back line that cut the goals against from 67 to 44 in a single year.

Edson Carli — #30, midfielder. Four league goals from midfield in 2026 — a steady producer who kept the play-in race alive into September.

Max Anchor — goalkeeper. The Decision Day hero: two saves in the September 20 shootout against Timbers2 to grab the West’s last play-in place by a single point. Young keepers build reputations on single afternoons — Anchor built his in one shootout.

Star Spotlight

October 11, 2026 — the 4–4 play-in epic. The wildest night of Tacoma’s season, and maybe of the whole 2026 MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs. Two-nil down at San Jose inside 11 minutes — a Tomo Allen header from a corner, then a Zach Bohane penalty — the Defiance came back from three separate deficits to draw 4–4 after extra time. Rafael Jauregui scored twice, Charlie Gaffney assisted twice, and Tacoma converted only one penalty in the shootout and went home. Heartbreak, but the fight became the defining image of Nagamura’s first season.

September 20, 2026 — Decision Day, done the hard way. Tacoma needed a result against a Timbers2 side that finished 2nd in the West: Gaffney’s 50th-minute opener, a 90th-minute equalizer conceded to ten-man Portland — and still the shootout won 4–3 behind two Max Anchor saves, the last play-in place taken by a single point over North Texas SC.

The Bronnik breakout. Signed as a teenager ahead of 2026, Mark Bronnik scored the 85th-minute equalizer in the season opener and finished with a team-best 13 league goals — the kind of season that gets a Defiance striker first-team attention, and exactly the story this club exists to write.

This Season (2026): The Defensive Reset

After 2025’s 62-scored, 67-conceded chaos, Nagamura’s first season was a reset with a heartbeat. Tacoma finished 9th in the Western Conference — 11 wins, 5 draws, 12 losses, 41 points, 40 goals for and 44 against — a 23-goal defensive improvement. The new era opened on March 1, 2026 with a comeback: Yu Tsukanome on 81 minutes and Mark Bronnik on 85 rescued a 2–2 draw with LAFC 2 at Starfire before Tacoma lost the shootout. The run-in was a rollercoaster — a 4–0 home rout of Sporting Kansas City II on August 24, a 3–0 loss at Real Monarchs on August 30, a 2–1 win at San Jose Earthquakes II on September 5, a 3–0 defeat at Ventura County FC on September 13, then Decision Day: 1–1 with Timbers2, the shootout won, the play-in place held by a single point.

And the play-in became the season’s signature: on October 11 at PayPal Park, the No. 9 seed Defiance produced the wildest game of the playoffs: 2–0 down inside 11 minutes, back from three separate deficits, 4–4 after extra time — and out on penalties, 3–1 in the shootout after converting only one spot kick. Its story is simple: a young team that learned to defend, refused to fold, and gave the whole league a playoff classic on its way out.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. Portland Timbers2 — the Cascadia war. The reserve-team edition of American soccer’s fiercest regional feud — Seattle vs. Portland, billed as a meeting of Cascadia rivals in the Timbers’ own coverage. The 2026 trilogy had everything: Portland’s 1–0 win on May 31 (Eric Izoita’s 11th-minute curler), a 2–0 Timbers2 win at Starfire on July 5, and the Decision Day classic on September 20 — Gaffney’s opener, a Portland red card, a 90th-minute equalizer, and Anchor’s shootout saves sending Tacoma to the playoffs while Portland took the No. 2 seed. The feud even has a first-team chapter: the Defiance’s 2025 Open Cup run died 3–2 against the Portland Timbers’ MLS side in the Round of 32.

2. San Jose Earthquakes II — the play-in executioners. Tacoma owned this fixture all regular season — a shootout win in May and 1–0 and 2–1 road wins in June and September. Then came the one that mattered: October 11, 2026, PayPal Park, the play-in. San Jose’s 2–0 start inside 11 minutes, Tacoma’s three comebacks, a 4–4 draw after extra time and a 3–1 shootout defeat that ended the Defiance’s season. The Pacific Division’s most painful new grudge.

3. Ventura County FC — the Pacific measuring stick. The Southern California side keeps appearing at Tacoma’s turning points. Ventura’s 3–2 win in the 2025 season opener started the slide that ended Diese’s tenure; Tacoma’s deepest recent playoff run began with a 4–0 win over Ventura in the 2024 Western Conference Quarterfinals, before a 5–1 semifinal loss to North Texas SC; and Ventura’s 3–0 win on September 13, 2026 was Tacoma’s worst result of the run-in. When these two meet, something in Tacoma’s season usually breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Tacoma Defiance play their home games, and how do I get tickets?
Tacoma Defiance play at Starfire Stadium, in the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington — the Seattle Sounders’ longtime training ground, with a listed capacity of 4,500. The club played in Tacoma at Cheney Stadium from 2018 to 2021, before returning to Starfire in 2022. Tickets are sold through the club’s official site, and MLS NEXT Pro playoff matches stream live on OneFootball and MLSNEXTPro.com.

Did Tacoma Defiance make the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro playoffs?
Yes — just. Tacoma finished 9th in the Western Conference with 41 points and took the final play-in place on Decision Day, beating Portland Timbers2 in a shootout after a 1–1 draw at Starfire. The season ended in the play-in round on October 11, 2026: a 4–4 draw after extra time at San Jose Earthquakes II, lost 3–1 on penalties — the wildest game of the 2026 playoffs.

Who is Tacoma Defiance’s best player?
Teenage striker Mark Bronnik, the No. 81 — the team’s top scorer with 13 league goals in a breakout 2026. Right behind him: right wingback Charlie Gaffney (No. 84), whose club-record 8 regular-season assists, 10 in all competitions, made him FotMob’s highest-rated Defiance player, and winger Rafael Jauregui (No. 42), who scored both Tacoma goals in the 4–4 play-in epic at San Jose.

What trophies has Tacoma Defiance won?
None yet — honestly. Across the S2 and Defiance eras, Tacoma has never won a league title or a cup. The best playoff runs are MLS NEXT Pro conference semifinals in 2022 and 2024, the best regular seasons are 2nd-place Western Conference finishes in 2022 and 2023, and the best U.S. Open Cup run reached the Round of 32 in 2025, where the Defiance lost 3–2 to the Portland Timbers’ first team.
