🔴 Detroit City FC Fans — Your Le Rouge Is Waiting!
The league’s meanest defence, a record-tying five-goal hero and a home playoff game at Keyworth — Detroit City is the team nobody wants in a knockout. Wear the rouge and stand with the Northern Guard.
The Club: Detroit City FC, Le Rouge and the People’s Club
Detroit City FC — Le Rouge, “The Red,” after Detroit’s French roots and the River Rouge — were founded in 2012 by five Detroiters, rose through the NPSL and NISA, and joined the USL Championship in 2022. This is a community-rooted club in the truest sense: supporters raised more than $700,000 to renovate Keyworth Stadium, the 1936 WPA landmark in Hamtramck — opened by President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself — where the Northern Guard Supporters march from the New Dodge Lounge before every match. The famous Detroit City FC schedule is a pilgrimage for lower-league fans across America, and the crest’s Spirit of Detroit statue and gold fleurs-de-lis carry the city’s French heritage into every game.
Head coach Danny Dichio, in charge since 2024 and signed to a new two-year deal in December 2025, has built the 2026 Detroit City FC roster around the league’s best defence — 21 goals conceded in 29 matches, and a league-record-tying five home goals allowed all season. Detroit have reached the playoffs in every USL season since joining, and the Detroit City FC roster’s crown jewel is Darren Smith, the South African striker whose 14 league goals included a record-tying five-goal night. If the DCFC kit is your colours, the fan-inspired Detroit City FC jersey designs in our Fan Favorite block below are built in that deep rouge.
The giant-killing is in the club’s DNA: NPSL Members Cup champions in 2019, NISA champions in 2020-21, and famous U.S. Open Cup wins over MLS sides Columbus Crew (2-1 in 2022) and Houston Dynamo (2024). Co-founder Sean Mann — who founded the recreational Detroit City Futbol League in 2010 before the club itself — remains CEO, and the grassroots model still defines everything. The future is already being built: AlumniFi Field, a privately funded 15,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in southwest Detroit, is under construction, though Keyworth remains home until it opens — and nights like this autumn are why the old ground will be missed.

Last Season: The Louisville Heist
Detroit’s 2025 regular season looked ordinary — eighth in the East on 37 points — and then Le Rouge did what Le Rouge does. On November 1, 2025, the No. 8 seed walked into Lynn Family Stadium and beat No. 1 seed Louisville City 1-0, Devon Amoo-Mensah scoring the only goal behind Carlos Saldaña’s shutout — the biggest upset in USL Championship Playoffs history, erasing a 36-point gap. A week later Detroit took eventual champions Pittsburgh to 0-0 through extra time before falling 4-3 on penalties in the Conference Semifinal. Captain Stephen Carroll retired at season’s end, closing an era — and opening the door for the club’s best USL campaign yet.
Best Players Right Now
Darren Smith — #7, Forward. The star of the Detroit City FC roster: 14 league goals in 2026, including five in one night against Sporting Club Jacksonville on June 13 — tying the USL Championship single-game record. The South African has 23 regular-season goals across two Detroit seasons and keeps finding the winner, like his 56th-minute curler against Rhode Island.
Carlos Herrera — #1, Goalkeeper. The league’s clean-sheet leader, with 13 shutouts in 2026 and his 200th career save recorded against Birmingham in October. Even his red card against Rhode Island could not break this defence — Detroit won that one 1-0 with ten men.
Kobe Hernandez-Foster — #22, Midfielder. The two-way engine: three goals, a team-leading creative output and 32 chances created by September. His 93rd-minute strike from inside his own half at Brooklyn sealed the earliest playoff clinch in club history.
Maxi Rodriguez — #21, Midfielder. A Detroit original from the NPSL days who returned on a multi-year deal in December 2025. Three league goals in 2026 and the tempo-setter of Dichio’s midfield — the heartbeat of Le Rouge.
Devon Amoo-Mensah — #30, Centre-back, Captain. The defensive leader of the league’s best defence and the scorer of the famous Louisville winner in 2025. Detroit’s back line starts with its captain.
Callum Montgomery — #4, Centre-back. A 2026 arrival from Cavalry FC and a cornerstone of the record-setting home defence — five goals conceded at Keyworth all season. He also scored in the playoff-clinching win at Brooklyn.
Star Spotlight: Five Goals, One Night, One Record
June 13, 2026 belongs to Darren Smith forever. The No. 7 scored five times in a 6-2 rout of Sporting Club Jacksonville, tying the USL Championship’s single-game goals record and producing the defining individual performance of Detroit’s season. Add the Louisville heist of 2025 — when Amoo-Mensah and Saldaña stunned the Shield winners — and Kobe Hernandez-Foster’s own-half clincher at Brooklyn, and you have a club whose big moments keep arriving exactly when the pressure peaks. That is the Le Rouge way.
And then there was the 10-man stand. On October 10, goalkeeper Carlos Herrera was sent off after just 23 minutes against Rhode Island — and Detroit still won 1-0, Smith curling in the 56th-minute winner in front of a delirious Keyworth, with 2025 playoff hero Carlos Saldaña deputizing between the posts. The win clinched the home playoff game and summed up the 2026 Le Rouge: the league’s best defence does not need eleven men, a lead, or an excuse. Five straight playoff trips, the earliest clinch in club history, and a fanbase that marches to the match like it owns the city — because on nights like these, it does.

This Season: Second Place, a Home Playoff Game, and History Within Reach
The 2026 Detroit City FC schedule has produced the club’s finest USL campaign: second in the Eastern Conference on 50 points (14 wins, 8 draws, 7 losses), level with Charleston Battery and chasing second place into the final day, with Tampa Bay Rowdies’ 58 points having already taken the Players’ Shield. The numbers behind it are defensive poetry — 21 conceded, the league’s best mark, and just five home goals allowed across 15 Keyworth matches, tying a league record. Detroit clinched its playoff berth on September 30 with a 3-1 win at Brooklyn — the earliest clinch in club history — then beat Rhode Island to lock a home Conference Quarterfinal. The Detroit City FC standings watch ends Saturday at Louisville; win or draw there, and Le Rouge keep second and the extra home game it can bring. The depth behind the stars matters in October: Ates Diouf returned on a two-year deal, Aedan Stanley arrived from Indy Eleven, and Ben Morris and Rafael Mentzingen — back at the club since April — give Dichio options across the front line. Keyworth averaged 6,229 fans a game in the league in 2025; in 2026 it has become a fortress almost nobody escapes with the ball in their net.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars
1. Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC — the Rust Belt war. Detroit’s defining USL rivalry is built on playoff collisions: the 1-0 upset of the No. 1-seed Hounds in Pittsburgh in 2023, and Pittsburgh’s shootout revenge in the 2025 semifinal on their way to the title. In 2026 Pittsburgh won 2-1 at home in April; Detroit answered 1-0 at Keyworth on September 19.
2. Louisville City FC. The East’s benchmark — and the team Detroit keeps ruining in October. The 2025 playoff upset is the rivalry’s centerpiece; Detroit won 2-1 at Keyworth on May 2, 2026, and the clubs close the regular season at Louisville on October 24 with seeding on the line.
3. Flint City Bucks — the Michigan derby. The cross-league U.S. Open Cup rivalry with Metro Detroit’s other lower-league power: meetings in 2015, 2016 and 2018, and a 1-0 Detroit win in the 2026 Open Cup second round. Bragging rights in Michigan run through this tie.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Detroit City FC called “Le Rouge”?
Le Rouge (“The Red”) nods to Detroit’s French founding roots and the River Rouge — the same heritage in the gold fleurs-de-lis on the crest. The club was founded in 2012 by five Detroiters, played in the NPSL and NISA, and joined the USL Championship in 2022, where it has reached the playoffs every season.
Where do Detroit City FC play their home games?
At Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck (capacity 7,933), a 1936 Works Progress Administration stadium opened by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is famous for the Northern Guard Supporters’ atmosphere. A new 15,000-seat home, AlumniFi Field in southwest Detroit, is under construction for the coming seasons.
Have Detroit City ever won the USL Championship?
Not yet — their best USL playoff runs are the Eastern Conference Semifinals (2023 and 2025), including the record-setting 1-0 upset of No. 1 seed Louisville City in 2025. The club did win silverware in its earlier eras: the NPSL Members Cup (2019) and NISA championships (2020-21). In 2026 they have already secured their best-ever league finish and a home playoff game.
Who is Detroit City’s star player in 2026?
South African striker Darren Smith (#7) — 14 league goals, including a record-tying five-goal game against Sporting Club Jacksonville on June 13, 2026 — behind a defence led by captain Devon Amoo-Mensah and league clean-sheet leader Carlos Herrera in goal.
