The Club

The New York Sirens play at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, in turquoise, navy blue, white and orange — and they may be the most tantalizing team in the PWHL. Head coach Greg Fargo has been in charge since 2024, general manager Pascal Daoust has drafted two first-overall picks in three years, and captain Micah Zandee-Hart leads a roster with as much young talent as any in the league. What the Sirens do not have — not yet — is a playoff appearance. Every season of the franchise’s existence has ended before the tournament starts, which gives this year’s team the clearest mission statement in hockey: be the first.

The fans, at least, have already arrived. On April 4, 2026, the Sirens hosted Seattle at Madison Square Garden in front of 18,006 fans — a U.S. record for a professional women’s hockey game — and won it in a shootout. A market that can do that on a spring night is a market waiting for a team to believe in. Searching for a New York Sirens jersey, the latest Sirens schedule or Sirens tickets? Start with the question every fan asks: when do the Sirens play — because the pieces are here, the building is ready, and the drought is the story until it isn’t.

The foundation, at least, is no mirage. New York held the first overall pick in two of the last three drafts and used them on Fillier and Kaltounková — a ready-made superstar and a rookie who stepped in and immediately led the team in goals. Add O’Brien’s playmaking and a captain in Zandee-Hart who does all the unglamorous work, and you get the profile of a team that is one good winter — one — from changing its entire story. Rebuilds are supposed to look exactly like this right before they work.

Last Season (2025-26): Seventh Place, But a Star Is Born

The standings told a familiar, frustrating story: seventh place, 36 points, and another spring spent watching the playoffs on television. The Sirens have never reached the PWHL postseason, and 2025-26 extended the drought — a young team that could skate with anyone on the right night and finished looking up at six teams when the music stopped. On paper, it reads like failure. In person, it felt like something building.

Because the individual stories were anything but failures. Sarah Fillier led the team in scoring with 23 points, confirming her status as one of the league’s true franchise players. Rookie Kristýna Kaltounková — the first overall pick in the 2025 draft — led the team with 11 goals, exactly the snarl and finish the Sirens drafted her for. And playmaker Casey O’Brien quietly dealt a team-high 15 assists, giving New York a young core that produces at every forward position.

Then there was the night that changed how the whole league talks about this franchise. The April 4 game at Madison Square Garden drew those record 18,006 fans and ended with a shootout win over Seattle — proof that New York does not have a fan problem. It has a patience problem, and patience is a lot easier to sell when the talent is this obvious. The 2026-27 season is where the Sirens owe those fans a playoff race.

Best Players Right Now (2026-27 Roster)

Sarah Fillier, Forward (#10) — The franchise player. The first overall pick in 2024, Fillier won Rookie of the Year and a share of the scoring title in 2025, then led the Sirens again with 23 points last season. Everything in New York orbits her — as it should.

Micah Zandee-Hart, Defense (#28) — The captain. Zandee-Hart anchors the blue line and the dressing room, the steady hand on a young team learning how to win the games that matter in March.

Kristýna Kaltounková, Forward (#98) — The 2025 first overall pick wasted no time: a team-high 11 goals as a rookie. Kaltounková plays with an edge that travels, and her second season is one of the league’s most exciting storylines.

Casey O’Brien, Forward (#26) — The playmaker. O’Brien’s team-high 15 assists last season made everyone around her more dangerous; on a team built around finishers, her vision is the connective tissue.

Jaime Bourbonnais, Defense (#14) — Alternate captain and a veteran presence on the back end. Bourbonnais gives the Sirens reliable minutes against top lines while the young forwards learn on the job.

Maja Nylén Persson, Defense (#8) — A smooth, puck-moving defender who helps New York play the fast, transitional game its forwards were built for. Depth on defense decides playoff races, and Persson is quality depth.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

The first story is Fillier herself, because players like her do not come around often. A first-overall pick who immediately played like one — Rookie of the Year, co-scoring champion, then the team’s scoring leader again on a seventh-place team. Stars on losing teams usually start looking elsewhere; Fillier has instead become the reason New York believes. If the Sirens break through this season, it will be because their best player dragged the standard up to her level — and the supporting cast, from Kaltounková’s goals to O’Brien’s playmaking, finally looks ready to meet her there.

The second story is that night at the Garden. Eighteen thousand and six people for a regular-season game — a U.S. record for the professional women’s game — and a shootout win to send them home loud. Teams talk about “markets” and “ceilings”; the Sirens accidentally proved theirs in one evening. Prudential Center is home, but the Garden night announced something bigger: when this team finally plays a home playoff game, tickets will be the hardest get in New York sports. That is the future this roster is playing for, starting December 6.

This Season (2026-27): The First Playoff Chase

The season opens on December 5, 2026, and New York’s campaign begins with a measuring stick: the Sirens host the Boston Fleet on December 6 at the Prudential Center — a home opener against the roster that swept last season’s major awards. Win or lose, Fargo’s team will know exactly where it stands by the end of opening weekend. A trip to expansion Detroit follows on December 12, then a visit from the 2026 finalist Ottawa Charge on December 19, in what should be a loud building in Newark.

The new league structure gives the chase a clear shape. With 12 teams split into two conferences and the top four in each reaching the playoffs, New York does not need to outrun Montréal and Boston over 30 games — it needs to finish fourth or better in the East, and it has the top-end talent to do it. The year closes with a flourish: December 27 at expansion San Jose, then a New Year’s Eve date at Seattle — the rematch of that record-crowd Garden game, this time in front of Seattle’s own league-leading fans. If the Sirens reach January in a playoff spot, the drought talk finally turns into something better: a countdown.

The math is friendlier than the drought talk suggests. Last season New York finished on 36 points — just two back of Toronto in the overall table — and the new format rewards exactly that kind of near-miss: stay in the pack, win the head-to-heads against the teams around you, and April hockey follows. The league’s first All-Star Game, on March 7, 2027 in Toronto, marks the season’s stretch run — and if the Sirens hold a playoff spot when the league pauses, New York’s spring will look like nothing this franchise has seen, because it will be a first.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch

Check the Sirens schedule and grab Sirens tickets early — the playoff chase opens with a heavyweight and closes the year with a grudge match:

  • December 6 — vs Boston Fleet: The home opener at the Prudential Center (3 p.m. ET). Boston brings the MVP, the top defender and the top rookie of last season — New York brings something to prove.
  • December 12 — at PWHL Detroit: A first visit to Little Caesars Arena, against an expansion team built to make noise from day one.
  • December 19 — vs Ottawa Charge: The 2026 Walter Cup finalists come to Newark. Ottawa’s spring ended one win from the Cup; the Sirens would love to spoil their winter.
  • December 27 — at San Jose: A cross-country trip to the SAP Center to face expansion San Jose in its first month of existence.
  • December 31 — at Seattle Torrent: New Year’s Eve at Climate Pledge Arena — the sequel to the record 18,006-fan Garden game, this time with Seattle’s crowd providing the noise.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. Boston Fleet — the rivalry. It has been the fixture since day one: Boston’s banners and awards against New York’s promise and noise. They open the season against each other on December 6 at the Prudential Center, and in this rivalry the regular season never feels regular.

2. Montréal Victoire — the champions in the way. Montréal owns the Cup, the league’s best record last season and the East’s top spot. For a Sirens team trying to crash the playoff picture, every meeting with the Victoire is a referendum on how far the rebuild has really come.

3. Seattle Torrent — the record-game rematch. Seattle was the other half of the loudest night in U.S. women’s hockey history, losing that 18,006-fan shootout at the Garden. On December 31 the Torrent get the home crowd, the holiday stage and a shot at payback — expect both teams to treat it like a playoff game.
