🏒 San Jose Fans — Your Mandarin Orange Is Waiting!
First game, first chapter — San Jose opens at SAP Center with the goalie who recorded the PWHL’s first-ever shutout, so make history in fan-inspired San Jose gear.
The Club
PWHL San Jose is the twelfth and final piece of the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s great expansion — one of four new teams taking the league to 12 for 2026-27, in the first season played with a conference format. The official name for the inaugural season is simply PWHL San Jose; a permanent nickname has been decided internally but not yet announced, so for now the city is the identity, with SAN JOSE worn diagonally across the front of the Bauer-made inaugural jerseys unveiled on October 8, 2026. The colors are orange, blue and white, inspired by the San Jose city flag. Home is SAP Center in San Jose, the building the Sharks call home. Searching for a PWHL San Jose jersey, the latest San Jose schedule or San Jose tickets? Start with the question every fan in the South Bay is asking: when does PWHL San Jose play — because the answer is the very first night of the season, at home.
The structure behind this team is unlike anything in the league. Troy Ryan — formerly head coach of the Toronto Sceptres and of Canada’s national team — was named on May 22, 2026 to hold both jobs at once, head coach and general manager, the first person in PWHL history to do both simultaneously. The man picking the players is the man coaching them. He built this roster through the June 2026 expansion process and the June 17 draft in Detroit with a clear signature: an Olympic-gold-medal defenseman, a record-book goaltender, and experienced signings from Boston, New York, Ottawa and Seattle. The Western Conference — with Minnesota, Las Vegas, Detroit, Seattle and Vancouver — is about to find out what a Ryan team looks like when he also gets to be the architect.

San Jose watched the 2025-26 season the way every expansion city does — as a preview of the world it was about to enter. That world was in excellent shape: the Montréal Victoire won the Walter Cup, beating the Ottawa Charge 3–1 in the Final, capped by a 4–0 shutout in the deciding Game 4 on May 20, 2026. Montréal also finished top of the regular-season standings with 62 points, and playoff MVP Marie-Philip Poulin delivered eight postseason points while playing with a torn ACL and meniscus. That is the league San Jose signed up for.
Then, in one extraordinary May, the map changed. Detroit was announced as an expansion team on May 6, 2026; Las Vegas and Hamilton followed on May 13; and on May 19, San Jose completed the set as the league’s twelfth franchise. The PWHL jumped from eight teams to twelve, added conferences, stretched the schedule to a league-record 180 games, and brought back an expanded 24-game Takeover Tour. Three days after San Jose’s announcement, Troy Ryan’s dual appointment made the new team the most interesting front-office story in the league.
The build rolled through the summer. The 2026 PWHL Draft — held June 17 in Detroit — delivered defenseman Laila Edwards at fourth overall, and she signed a three-year deal on September 14. Free agency brought goaltenders Corinne Schroeder from Seattle and Abbey Levy from Boston, forwards Kristin O’Neill from New York and Natálie Mlýnková, and defenders Rory Guilday from Ottawa and Daniela Pejšová from Boston. When the mandarin-orange jerseys were unveiled in October, the picture was complete: a brand-new team with a decorated coach-GM, a gold-medal cornerstone on the blue line, and a home opener against the league’s two-time champions already circled on the calendar.
Best Players Right Now (2026-27 Roster)
Laila Edwards, Defense — The cornerstone. Edwards was the fourth-overall pick in the 2026 draft and signed a three-year deal in September: a Wisconsin star with 199 career points who won Olympic gold with Team USA in February 2026 and was named MVP of the 2024 World Championship. Franchise defensemen don’t grow on trees — San Jose drafted one.
Corinne Schroeder, Goaltender — A name already in the PWHL record book: Schroeder recorded the first shutout in league history, on January 1, 2024 with New York. Signed from Seattle, she brings a veteran’s calm to a brand-new crease.
Kristin O’Neill, Forward — Signed from New York, O’Neill is one of the experienced hands Troy Ryan brought in to make sure this expansion roster doesn’t play like one. Expect her fingerprints on the team’s identity early.
Rory Guilday, Defense — A defender signed away from Ottawa — a team that reached the Walter Cup Final last spring — Guilday adds proven, playoff-hardened minutes to a blue line built around youth at the top.
Abbey Levy, Goaltender — Signed from Boston, Levy gives San Jose a second experienced option in goal alongside Schroeder — the kind of depth expansion teams rarely get to enjoy in year one.
Daniela Pejšová, Defense — Another signing from Boston’s deep roster, Pejšová strengthens a defensive group that will be tested from opening night by the league’s established attacks.
Natálie Mlýnková, Forward — A Czechia international signed to the forward group, Mlýnková adds an international pedigree to an attack that will be built by committee in the first season.
One honest note: San Jose had not published jersey numbers for its roster when this guide was written, and the captaincy is still to be announced — with a nickname reveal also still to come, this team has a few more firsts to hand out before opening night.
Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know
It is rare for an expansion team’s most important person to never take a shift, but that is the case in San Jose. Troy Ryan is the first person in PWHL history to hold the head coach and general manager jobs at the same time — a former Toronto Sceptres and Canada national team head coach. There is no gap between the front office’s plan and the bench’s plan, because they are the same man. Every signing this summer, from Schroeder’s experience to Edwards’ three-year deal, carries his fingerprints twice.
On the ice, the future has a name: Laila Edwards. A defenseman who put up 199 points at Wisconsin, won Olympic gold with Team USA in February 2026 and was the MVP of the 2024 World Championship — before her first professional season has even started. Expansion teams usually sell hope; San Jose can point to a specific 200-foot reason for it, patrolling the blue line at SAP Center, in the loudest color the league has ever worn. Players like this are why you buy the ticket in season one.

This Season (2026-27): Season One Starts December 5
San Jose doesn’t just open its season at home — it helps open the league’s. On Saturday, December 5, 2026, the first game in franchise history is also the home opener: the Minnesota Frost at SAP Center (7 p.m. ET), on the opening night of the PWHL’s biggest season. The Frost are the league’s first dynasty, Walter Cup champions in 2024 and 2025, so there is no soft landing. From there the 30-game schedule (18 in-conference, 12 crossover) runs through April 18, 2027, and December alone brings Seattle to SAP Center, a road swing through Montréal, Ottawa, Hamilton and Toronto, and home dates with New York and Boston.
The math of the new format is friendly to dreamers: eight of 12 teams reach the playoffs, the top four in each conference, and each conference winner chooses its first-round opponent — meaning every point San Jose banks in December still matters in April. The league’s first All-Star Game arrives March 7, 2027 in Toronto, right in the stretch run. Nobody can say yet what this roster is, but by Christmas — after dates with the champions and the finalists — we’ll have a pretty good idea. Expansion seasons are supposed to be about patience; try telling that to a building that has waited this long for a team of its own.
Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch
Check the San Jose schedule and grab San Jose tickets early — these are the nights that will shape season one:
- December 5 — vs Minnesota Frost (first game in franchise history and home opener): Opening night of the league season at SAP Center (7 p.m. ET) — and the guests are the two-time Walter Cup champions. There is no bigger way to begin.
- December 9 — vs Seattle Torrent: The West Coast rivalry starts here. The rivalry even starts early — preseason games on November 29–30 at Tech CU Arena come before this one.
- December 12 — at Montréal Victoire: A trip to face the defending champions on their own ice, one week into the season. Win or learn — either way, San Jose finds out where it stands.
- December 15 — at Ottawa Charge: The road swing continues against last season’s Walter Cup finalists, beaten in the Final by Montréal.
- December 17 — at PWHL Hamilton: Expansion team against expansion team, in the middle of a four-game December road trip.
- December 20 — at Toronto Sceptres: A visit to Troy Ryan’s former team to close the road trip — his new project, tested in his old building.
- December 27 — vs New York Sirens: Home again between the holidays, against an Original Six club still chasing its first-ever playoff berth.
- December 30 — vs Boston Fleet: The year ends at SAP Center against one of last season’s 62-point powers — and two of San Jose’s signings, Levy and Pejšová, face their old team.
- January 13 — vs PWHL Las Vegas: The nearest neighbours finally meet, at SAP Center. The return game follows on January 27 at T-Mobile Arena — the West’s newest rivalry, twice in two weeks.
Biggest Rivalries — The Wars
1. PWHL Las Vegas — the nearest-neighbour war. Two expansion teams, one stretch of the Western map, and a shared conviction that the conference’s future belongs to them. The first meeting is January 13 at SAP Center, with the return in Vegas on January 27 — back-to-back chapters to open a rivalry that will run for years.
2. Seattle Torrent — the West Coast war. Seattle set the attendance standard for new teams last season, leading the league at the gate, and San Jose gets them early and often: preseason games on November 29–30 at Tech CU Arena, then a real one at SAP Center on December 9. Corinne Schroeder facing her old Seattle teammates adds a personal edge from the start.
3. Minnesota Frost — the measuring stick. Not a rivalry yet — a standard. Minnesota won the league’s first two Walter Cups, and they are the guests for the first game in San Jose history on December 5. Every young franchise learns what it is by skating against the best; San Jose’s education begins on opening night.
