⚽ Boston Legacy FC Fans — Your Legacy Takes Flight!
Year one is in the books: a record-breaking debut crowd, a first win written in stoppage time, and a Brazilian No. 9 who scores when it matters most. The swan has landed in Boston — now wear the green and be part of what comes next.
The Club
Boston Legacy FC is the newest chapter of a story this city has been waiting nearly a decade to resume. Boston’s original NWSL team, the Breakers, were founding members of the league in 2013 before folding after the 2017 season. In 2023 the city won the league’s 15th expansion franchise, owned by Boston Unity Soccer Partners — an all-female ownership group led by Jennifer Epstein, with Stephanie Connaughton, Ami Kuan Danoff and Anna Palmer — and in 2026 the Legacy took the field as one of two expansion clubs, alongside Denver Summit FC, in a 16-team NWSL.
The road to the name was bumpy. The club first launched in October 2024 as BOS Nation FC, and the reaction was so rough that the club apologized and started over. The rebrand, unveiled in March 2025, got it right: Boston Legacy FC, and a crest designed by Matthew Wolff that fans instantly took to their hearts — a white swan on a black shield, its eight feathers honoring the eight original 2013 NWSL clubs, Boston’s own Breakers among them. The gaps between the feathers echo the cables of the Zakim Bridge, and the swan itself nods to Romeo and Juliet, the famous mute swans of the Boston Public Garden. The colors say it plainly: Legacy Green, Pitch Black and Stadium White, with a flash of fuchsia Fire Berry in the details.
Home, for now, is a tale of two stadiums. The Legacy’s long-term home will be a renovated White Stadium in Franklin Park — the first venue in America to house both a major-league franchise and a public high school athletics program — but legal and construction delays pushed that opening to 2028. So the inaugural season was split between Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, making Boston the first women’s pro team to play a regular season at an NFL venue, and Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, which hosted seven home games. The first match of all, on March 14, 2026 against defending champions Gotham FC, drew 30,207 fans to Gillette — a league record for an inaugural home opener.
On the touchline stands Filipa Patão, the Portuguese coach hired from Benfica in June 2025 as the club’s first-ever head coach, working with general manager Domènec “Domè” Guasch, who built this roster entirely from scratch — Boston and Denver were the first expansion clubs in league history with no expansion draft to lean on. The captain’s armband belongs to Canadian defender Bianca St-Georges, and the supporters have already given the project its soundtrack: “Our Legacy Takes Flight.” 🦢

The Road to the Debut: Building a Club From Scratch
There is no “last season” section for Boston Legacy FC, because before March 2026 there was no Boston Legacy FC — and honestly, that is the best story in the league this year. Most expansion teams inherit something: a draft windfall, a ready-made roster, a stadium with their name on it. The Legacy inherited a crest, a color, a lawsuit-delayed stadium project and a blank sheet of paper.
The build started in the front office. Guasch was appointed to construct a squad with no expansion draft — a rule change that meant every single player had to be recruited, signed or traded for the old-fashioned way. The first signature, on July 2, 2025, was midfielder Annie Karich from SC Freiburg. Eight days later came Malian forward Aïssata Traoré from FC Fleury 91. Alba Caño arrived from Barcelona at the end of July, Brazilian striker Amanda Gutierres signed from Palmeiras on October 3, and in December the club landed its marquee American: USWNT goalkeeper Casey Murphy, with Benfica midfielder Laís Araújo joining the same month.
What Patão asked of that group was enormous — gel a brand-new roster, in a new league for most of them, splitting home games between two stadiums in two states. The early returns were as harsh as expansion life gets: five straight defeats to open the season, bottom of the table, and a fanbase wondering what it had signed up for. What happened next is why this club already feels different. The Legacy kept building, kept believing, and turned the second half of the season into a surge that beat playoff teams in their own buildings. Year one was never about a trophy. It was about proving Boston belongs in this league — and that argument is settled.
Best Players Right Now
Amanda Gutierres — #9, forward. The star of the inaugural season and the first name on this list by a mile. Signed from Palmeiras, the Brazilian striker finished as the club’s top scorer with 10 league goals, took the penalties — converting spot-kicks against Orlando, Bay FC and Chicago — and developed a habit of scoring in bunches when the lights were brightest: braces in the famous road wins at Washington and Portland, both sealed deep in stoppage time. Every expansion team needs a face. Boston’s wears No. 9.
Aïssata Traoré — #14, forward. The Malian international from FC Fleury 91 wrote her name into the club’s history book first: on March 28, 2026, against Utah Royals, Traoré scored the first goal Boston Legacy FC ever produced. She finished with seven league goals, and her fingerprints are on the club’s defining night too — it was Traoré who leveled the first-ever win against Denver at 90 minutes before the captain won it in stoppage time. Pace, power and a place in the record books forever.
Casey Murphy — #1, goalkeeper. The marquee domestic signing of the expansion build, and the veteran spine of a young team. The USWNT goalkeeper was ever-present through the heart of the season, piling up 66 saves by early October behind a defense that was learning on the job. Expansion sides leak goals; what they cannot survive is chaos. Murphy’s command of her box gave Boston the calm base that the late-season surge was built on.
Bianca St-Georges — #53, defender, captain. The Canadian full-back wore the armband all season and scored the most famous goal of year one: the 90+4′ winner in the first victory in club history. Captains are supposed to produce the moment when everything is on the line — St-Georges did it in May and set the standard for everyone who follows her in this shirt.
Nichelle Prince — #12, forward. The Canadian international announced herself in the club’s first-point game on April 29, setting an NWSL record with two assists inside 15 minutes, then scored the equalizer in the first win over Denver. When Boston needed a spark off the line or a different look in attack, Prince was the answer more often than anyone.
Sammy Smith — #8, forward. The local hero. The Boston-area forward scored in that first-point draw with North Carolina, netted the opener in the August draw at Denver, and grabbed the equalizer in the return match with Gotham. Four league goals and a hometown story that the Gillette crowd has completely adopted — every club needs one of their own, and Smith is Boston’s.
Star Spotlight
The stoppage-time assassin. Some strikers score goals. Amanda Gutierres scores the goals that become folklore. September 13, 2026, Audi Field, Washington: Boston, written off all season, are holding a famous 1–0 win over the Spirit when the clock passes 90 minutes. Most teams park the bus and pray. Gutierres scored twice — at 90+4′ and again at 90+6′ — to turn a good road win into a 3–0 rout that announced the Legacy’s late-season surge to the entire league.
She did it again. Three weeks later, October 3, Providence Park, Portland — one of the hardest road trips in the NWSL, against a Thorns side chasing playoff seeding. Boston won 4–2, and Gutierres closed the show the way she closes everything: a brace at 88′ and 90+3′. Two statement road wins, four goals, all of them after the 87th minute. When a game is dying and Boston needs one moment of quality, there is exactly one player every fan in green is looking at.
Why she matters beyond the goals. Gutierres arrived from Palmeiras in October 2025 as the expansion build’s biggest attacking bet — a Brazil international asked to be the finisher, the penalty taker and the face of a franchise that did not yet have a single result to sell. Ten league goals later, the bet is paid in full. Expansion teams usually spend years searching for an identity. Boston found theirs in a No. 9 who treats stoppage time like her personal stage.

This Season (2026): The Surge After the Storm
The final numbers tell only half the story: 12th place of 16, nine wins, five draws and 14 defeats from 28 matches, 32 points, 38 goals scored and 47 conceded — and a playoff race that ended before Decision Day. But split the season in two and you get the real picture. The first half was an expansion team’s nightmare: an 0-0-5 start, bottom of the table through five rounds, and a first point that did not arrive until April 29, a 2–2 draw with North Carolina lit up by Nichelle Prince’s record-breaking two assists in 15 minutes.
The second half was a warning to the rest of the league. The first win, when it came on May 3, was a stoppage-time comeback for the ages against Denver. By autumn the Legacy were a team nobody wanted to visit: a 3–0 demolition of the Washington Spirit at Audi Field on September 13, a 4–2 win at Portland on October 3, and a 2–1 home win over Racing Louisville on October 16 in the run-in. Patão’s young squad did not sneak into the playoffs — but they spent the last two months beating teams who did, and that is exactly how a second-year jump gets built.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars
1. Denver Summit FC — the Class of ’26. Forever linked: the two expansion clubs who built rosters from scratch in the same winter and debuted on the same weekend. The first meeting, on May 3, 2026 at Gillette, became Boston’s founding myth — twice behind, Prince leveling at 44′, Traoré equalizing at 90′, and captain St-Georges winning it at 90+4′ for the first victory in club history. The return at Centennial Stadium on August 2 finished 1–1, Smith’s opener canceled out by a Janine Sonis penalty. Boston end year one unbeaten against their expansion twins — and neither fanbase will ever let the other forget a single kick of it.
2. Gotham FC — the champions who crashed the debut. New York’s club walked into Gillette on March 14, 2026 and spoiled the biggest party in Boston soccer history, Esther González’s goal handing the Legacy a 1–0 defeat in front of that record 30,207 crowd. Boston’s answer came in the return at Harrison on May 9 — a 1–1 draw, Smith scoring, against the defending champions. Boston versus New York needs no manufacturing in any sport, and this one already has a grievance, a record crowd and a score to settle.
3. Washington Spirit — the Audi Field storyline. A split series with wild swings in both directions. Washington won the first meeting 2–1 at Pawtucket on July 19; Boston responded on September 13 with the performance of their season, a 3–0 road rout at Audi Field sealed by Gutierres’ two stoppage-time goals. That same stadium hosts the 2026 NWSL Championship — and every Legacy fan now associates Audi Field with the night their team stopped being an expansion punchline.
