⚽ Charlotte Fans — The Shield Is Yours, Now Finish the Job!
A league-record 73 goals, the most lethal attack in USL League One and the first trophy in club history — the Jacks took the Players’ Shield and own home field all the way to the Final. Navy and parchment, full voice — this is the season to wear the winners’ colors.
The Club
Charlotte Independence was founded on September 17, 2014, and its identity is stitched into the city’s revolutionary past. The club is nicknamed “The Jacks” for Captain James Jack, who legend holds rode to Philadelphia carrying the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence — the crest carries “1775” for that declaration, and the 2026 County Kit literally prints excerpts of the document across its dark panels. The colors are navy, blue and parchment, and the club is owned by Queen City Soccer Club, LLC.
Home is American Legion Memorial Stadium in the Elizabeth neighborhood — a historic ground first opened in 1936 as a World War I memorial, rebuilt in 2021, holding 10,500 fans with the downtown Charlotte skyline beyond the field. In 2026 the club also plays a share of home fixtures at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex at Matthews, but the playoff opener on November 1 is at Memorial Stadium, where it belongs.
The defining figure is head coach Mike Jeffries — in charge since 2019 in his second stint, and now, after his 65th USL League One win on October 17, 2026, the winningest manager in league history. For a decade the Jacks were the league’s nearly team: playoff regulars, 2023 Final losers on penalties, forever a step short. In 2026, Jeffries’ rebuilt side stopped being nearly anything. They became champions of the regular season — the first trophy in club history, and the first Charlotte men’s professional soccer trophy since the Carolina Lightnin’ in 1981.

Last Season (2025): The Bubble Team
Nobody in Charlotte mistook 2025 for a contender’s campaign, which is what makes 2026 so stunning. The Independence finished eighth — 10 wins, 7 draws, 13 losses, 37 points — a streaky, mid-table side that lived on the playoff bubble all year. They lost their regular-season finale 2–0 at FC Naples and still backed into the eighth seed because AV Alta and Forward Madison both failed to win, extending the club’s run of playoff appearances to six straight.
The run lasted one night: a 2–1 quarterfinal defeat away at One Knoxville SC, Christian Chaney scoring Charlotte’s goal. Chaney finished as the club’s top scorer with 12 league goals, Jon Bakero recorded nine assists, and Nick Spielman and Clay Dimick played every one of the 2,700 league minutes. It was a respectable season by the club’s old standards. The rebuild that followed — a large newcomer class around a small returning core, and Luis Álvarez returning on loan from Tampa Bay — tore those standards up completely.
Best Players Right Now
Souaibou Marou — #26, forward. The Golden Boot leader and the face of the Shield season: 18 league goals, a new club single-season record passing Enzo Martínez’s 16 from 2021, capped by the hat trick at Greenville on October 17 that clinched the Shield itself. The Cameroon international is the most feared finisher in the league right now.
Jon Bakero — #10, midfielder. The league’s creative king: eight league goals and the USL League One assist crown — his 15th assist of the season, at Sarasota on October 3, set the league’s single-season record. The Spaniard pulls every string in Jeffries’ attack, and half of Marou’s highlight reel starts at his feet.
Luis Álvarez — #47, attacking midfielder. Nine league goals in just 15 appearances despite a shortened season, and the league’s Player of the Month for June. The Honduran, back on loan from the Tampa Bay Rowdies after 57 earlier appearances for the club, gives Charlotte a second match-winner defenses cannot ignore.
Joey Skinner — #3, defender/wingback. An academy product turned two-way weapon: six league goals, 11 goal contributions, four goals in six matches in October, and two league Player of the Week awards in five weeks — including one for the 3–0 win over the New York Cosmos. A fullback scoring like a forward.
Christopher Jaime — #8, midfielder. A regular starter in the league’s best midfield with two goals and six assists, scorer of the opener in the Cosmos rout. The engine room that lets Bakero and Álvarez play free.
Clay Dimick — #17, defender, captain. The ever-present leader of the back line and the club captain who fronted the Shield celebrations — a Charlotte fixture since long before the trophy arrived, and the man who will lift whatever comes next.
Star Spotlight
Shield night at Greenville. October 17, 2026: Charlotte went to their fiercest rivals and won 3–0 to clinch the Players’ Shield — the first trophy in club history. Marou scored a hat trick: his opener was his 16th goal of the season, tying the club record, and the hat trick took him to a record 18 and the outright Golden Boot lead. The same night, Jeffries won his 65th league match to become the winningest manager in USL League One history.
The 89th-minute comeback. October 3, 2026 at Sarasota Paradise: trailing 2–1 in the 89th minute, Charlotte won 3–2. Marou — who had opened the scoring from a Bakero corner — equalized at 89′, and Stefano Pinho won it in stoppage time. Bakero’s assist on the opener was his 15th of the season, a league single-season record. Champions find a way; that night is the proof.
The kid burns his old club. March 31, 2026, U.S. Open Cup second round: 18-year-old Viggo Ortiz, signed from the Charleston Battery in January, scored the extra-time winner — a solo finish — as Charlotte beat Charleston 3–2 after extra time to reach the Round of 32 and a first-ever Queen City derby against Charlotte FC.

This Season (2026): The Shield Season
First place, and it was not close for long. Charlotte top the table with 66 points from 31 matches — 20 wins, 6 draws, just 5 losses — and a goal difference of +31 built on 73 goals, a USL League One single-season record. The Shield, the first trophy in club history, was sealed on October 17 with a game to spare. As No. 1 seed, the Jacks hold home field for every playoff round they reach. This attack also gained 19 points from losing positions — comebacks are not accidents here; they are a habit.
The cups told the same story of a club arriving: an Open Cup run to the Round of 32 that included beating Charleston after extra time before a 6–0 lesson from Charlotte FC in the first Queen City derby, and a USL Cup group won unbeaten before a quarterfinal loss to Hartford Athletic. None of it dims the main event. The 2023 Final was lost on penalties; the league championship is the one prize still missing from the cabinet, and this squad — record attack, record assist-maker, home field throughout — is built to go and take it.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars
1. Greenville Triumph SC — the Battle of I-85. The Carolinas derby up and down Interstate 85. Charlotte lead the all-time series 9-7-0 and have won seven of the last ten meetings — and the 2026 editions were a sweep: 1–0 in the USL Cup in June, 1–0 in the league in August, and the 3–0 Shield-clinching win at Greenville in October, Marou’s hat trick on their own ground. Few trophies are lifted in sweeter places.
2. Charleston Battery — the Southern Derby. A derby dating to Charlotte’s USL Championship years. The 2026 cup editions burned hot: Charlotte’s 3–2 extra-time Open Cup win in March, Ortiz scoring the winner against his former club, and a 2–2 USL Cup draw at Charleston in July that Charlotte followed by winning the shootout to top the group on the Battery’s own field.
3. Richmond Kickers. No trophy, just a grudge: Charlotte have beaten Richmond seven straight times, with Richmond’s last win in the series back in September 2024. The 2026 meetings kept the streak rolling — 2–1 in the USL Cup in April, 3–1 in the league in July, and 2–1 at Richmond in September with a Joey Skinner winner just before halftime.
