The Club

The Houston Astros are the team that turned “rebuild” into a dynasty — and then watched the dynasty get weird. Founded in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s and renamed the Astros in 1965 when they moved into the Astrodome, they play at Daikin Park in downtown Houston, wearing navy and orange, and they own two World Series titles — 2017 and 2022. From 2015 through 2024, nobody in the American League won more October games. The roll call of pennants — 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 — made Houston the team everyone measured themselves against. Then came the strangest season in franchise history.

Last Season (2026): 81-81 and Division Champs

Read that again: 81-81 — and first place in the AL West. The 2026 Astros became the worst team ever to make the playoffs in a full season, breaking a record nobody wanted (the 2005 Padres went 82-80). They clinched on the final day, September 27, with a 9-0 thrashing of the Athletics in West Sacramento — while the Texas Rangers lost 6-4 at Minnesota minutes earlier to finish 80-82, one game back. Houston held the tiebreaker, so the crown was theirs either way. It was the club’s fifth AL West title in six years and its ninth postseason trip in ten years, after missing October in 2025.

How did it happen? Start with the hole: 11-20 in April, 11 games under .500 at one point, 20-31 in late May. In April, with the club in last place, Christian Walker looked around the clubhouse and told USA Today, “There’s a hundred wins in this room.” He was wrong about the number. He was right about the fight. The Astros clawed back to .500 on the season’s final weekend — outscored by 32 runs on the year, playing the final six weeks without a general manager after Dana Brown was dismissed in late August. Then October arrived, and it ended fast: the Chicago White Sox swept Houston 2-0 in the Wild Card Series at Daikin Park (6-3, 7-3 on September 29-30), making the Astros the first team eliminated from the 2026 postseason. It was the club’s ninth straight home playoff loss. Game 2 was the nightmare — Hunter Brown couldn’t escape the first inning, down 4-0 before the crowd settled in.

Best Players Right Now (2027 Roster)

Yordan Alvarez, 29, Designated Hitter (#44) — The best hitter on the planet in 2026. Won the AL batting title at .316 — the lowest average ever for a big-league batting champ — with 42 homers and 106 RBIs, and he’s the presumptive AL MVP. Went 1-for-8 in the Wild Card Series, which tells you how alone he was.

Jose Altuve, 36, Second Base (#27) — Mr. Astro. The 5-foot-6 heartbeat of the golden era, still grinding at 36. Every October run this franchise ever had runs through him.

Jeremy Peña, 29, Shortstop (#3) — The leadoff man and defensive anchor. Steady, clutch, and the kind of October player who seems built for the big inning.

Isaac Paredes, 27, Third Base (#15) — The pull-power specialist. A free agent this winter — his club option converts to a mutual option if he finishes top-10 in MVP voting — so his Houston future is one of the offseason’s biggest questions.

Christian Walker, 35, First Base (#8) — Gold Glove defense at first and the clubhouse voice who called the shot back in April. Didn’t miss a beat in the field all summer.

Yainer Diaz, 28, Catcher (#21) — The everyday backstop. Big arm, bigger power potential, and still growing into the job behind the plate.

Hunter Brown, 28, Starting Pitcher (#58) — The ace who had the worst night of his life in Game 2. The stuff is frontline; 2027 is about the bounce-back.

Josh Hader, 32, Closer (#71) — The lockdown lefty at the back of the bullpen. When the Astros have a lead late, it still feels safe.

Bryan Abreu, 29, Relief Pitcher (#52) — The setup man — and a free agent. Gave up the back-breaking three-run homer in Game 2, which only makes his market more interesting.

Cam Smith, 23, Right Field — The rookie. Thrown into the fire in right field and held his own — part of the young wave Houston is counting on.

Lucas Spence, Rookie, Center Field (#28) — The September folk hero. Recalled from Triple-A, went 6-for-18 with four homers in five games, then ripped the two-run triple that broke open the division clincher. Instant fan favorite.

Jake Meyers, 30, Center Field (#6) — The defensive wizard in center, lost for the year to injury. His glove was missed every single night of the stretch run.

Manager: Joe Espada, 51 — Third season in the dugout. Steered an 81-81 team with no GM to a division title — and now his own future depends on who the club hires to run baseball operations. Assistant GMs Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff are the internal candidates.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

The worst playoff team ever — and they celebrated like kings. September 27, 2026, West Sacramento: the Astros needed a win and some help. They got both. Rookie Lucas Spence’s two-run triple keyed a four-run third, Peter Lambert and Ethan Pecko threw five shutout innings, and the 9-0 final was barely over when the Rangers’ loss in Minnesota made it official. At 81-81 — a .500 team, outscored by 32 runs on the season — Houston won the AL West. No full-season playoff team had ever been worse. The champagne didn’t care.

Yordan’s masterpiece. In a season where the Astros’ offense ranked near the bottom of everything except one man, Yordan Alvarez was magnificent: a .316 average for the batting title, 42 home runs, 106 RBIs — and he did it while the lineup around him produced a .233/.300/.396 line. He carried a franchise on his back for six months. The MVP vote should be a formality.

Goodbye to McCullers. In July, the Astros traded Lance McCullers Jr. to Milwaukee — 19 postseason appearances, a 3.47 October ERA, two World Series rings, and one of the great curveballs of his generation. It was a salary move, and everyone understood it. It still felt like the golden era packing its bags.

Next Season (2027): Who Are the Astros Now?

That’s the question hanging over Daikin Park. The core is still here — Alvarez in his prime, Altuve defying time, Peña and Diaz in their best years — and the kids (Smith, Spence) give the lineup a jolt it desperately needed. But the winter is full of landmines: a brand-new front office to hire, a manager whose contract situation is tied to that hire, and two key free agents in Abreu and Paredes. The rotation needs Hunter Brown to be the ace again and needs real depth behind him. And over everything: the collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, and the sport is bracing for a possible lockout. If baseball is played on time, the Astros open 2027 as defending division champs with everything to prove — because nobody in that clubhouse believes 81-81 is who they are.

Mark Your Calendar: Upcoming Games to Watch

Wondering when the Astros play? The Astros schedule for 2027 is out — and it opens with a bang. Grab your Astros tickets early for these:

  • March 25 — vs Texas Rangers (Opening Day, Daikin Park): The earliest traditional Opening Day in MLB history, and it’s the Silver Boot Series. All 30 teams play; Houston gets its most hated rival at home.
  • March 29-31 — vs Boston Red Sox: The six-game opening homestand continues with three against Boston. First measuring stick of the young season.
  • April 23-25 — vs New York Yankees: A weekend series at Daikin Park. The October history between these clubs needs no introduction.
  • July 2-4 — at New York Yankees (Yankee Stadium): Fourth of July weekend in the Bronx. Astros fans travel well; this one will be loud.
  • July 16-18 — at Texas Rangers (Rivalry Weekend, Arlington): MLB’s Rivalry Weekend sends Houston to Arlington for three. After the one-game 2026 race, this series will be circled all summer.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars

1. Texas Rangers — THE war. The Silver Boot Series, the in-state blood feud, the 2023 ALCS heartbreak — and now a division decided by a single game in 2026. There is no bigger series on the Astros schedule.

2. Seattle Mariners — The West grind. Thirteen meetings a year, and the M’s are always lurking. The 2026 race was supposed to include them; 2027 might be their turn to crash the party.

3. New York Yankees — The October history. 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022 — the Yankees are the team the Astros have spent a decade beating when it matters most. The respect is real. The hatred is mutual.

4. Chicago White Sox — The fresh wound. They took the 2005 World Series from Houston — and now the 2026 Wild Card Series, a sweep at Daikin Park that ended the season in two nights. Payback is officially on the calendar.
