The Club

Go Spurs Go — and go they did. Founded in 1967 in the ABA, the San Antonio Spurs play at Frost Bank Center in black and silver, and they own five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014). From David Robinson to Tim Duncan to the 2014 “beautiful game,” this is the model franchise — and after a 62-win season that ended in the Finals, the model is winning again.

Last Season (2025-26): The Leap

62-20 — first in the Southwest, second in the West, and the most stunning single-season turnaround in recent memory. San Antonio jumped from 34 wins to 62, becoming just the fourth team in NBA history to go from the lottery to 60-plus wins in one season. The Spurs finished as runners-up in the NBA Cup (losing the championship game to — you guessed it — the Knicks), then ripped through the Western Conference playoffs, knocking out the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the West Finals. The Finals were heartbreak: New York took Game 1 105-95, Game 2 105-104, and after San Antonio blew a 29-point lead in Game 4 (OG Anunoby’s putback winner), the Knicks closed it out 94-90 in Game 5 — the Spurs squandering a 15-point lead in that one too. Victor Wembanyama still averaged 26.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks in the series, winning over the league even in defeat.

Best Players Right Now (2026-27 Roster)

Victor Wembanyama, 22, Center (#1) — The alien. Reigning Defensive Player of the Year, the early favorite for MVP, and already the most dominant two-way force in basketball. He averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.1 blocks and a steal a night last season — and he’s still getting better.

De’Aaron Fox, 28, Guard (#4) — The veteran engine. His max extension begins now, and he starts opening night next to Wemby. The Finals exposed fit questions with the young guards, but when he’s right, the Spurs’ offense hums.

Stephon Castle, 21, Guard (#5) — The leap. After winning 2025 Rookie of the Year, Castle made a massive second-year jump and starts alongside Fox in the three-guard lineup.

Dylan Harper, 20, Guard (#2) — The rookie who played like a veteran. Harper was San Antonio’s breakout playoff star — 25 points in the Finals Game 5 — and he opens the season as a starter. The backcourt of the future is now.

Devin Vassell, 26, Guard-Forward — The smooth scorer. A career 38%+ three-point shooter who spaces the floor and guards up.

Keldon Johnson, 27, Forward — The heart. Coming off a Sixth Man of the Year season, Johnson’s energy off the bench remains the soul of the second unit.

Tobias Harris, 33, Forward — The big summer add. Signed to fix the power-forward spot, the 15-year veteran brings shooting and steadiness. He’s dealing with a left calf strain and is questionable for opening night.

Harrison Barnes, 34, Forward — The championship-tested veteran. Fourteen NBA seasons, a title with Golden State, and the locker-room voice of a Finals team.

Luke Kornet, 31, Center — The reliable backup big. Size, screening and smarts behind Wemby.

Julian Champagnie, 25, Forward — The glue wing. Three-and-D minutes and big-game steadiness.

Carter Bryant, 20, Forward — The rookie wing. Length and defensive upside on a team that collects it.

Head coach: Mitch Johnson — Second full season. After Gregg Popovich stepped down in May 2025, Johnson guided the youngest Finals team in years and has the entire core bought in.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know

The 62-win leap. Thirty-four wins to sixty-two — with the same young core. Wembanyama missed 18 regular-season games and the Spurs kept winning anyway, proof that Castle, Harper, Fox and the system are real. BetMGM has San Antonio at 59.5 wins this season and predicts the over: the best record in the league is the target.

Wemby’s Finals — and the aftermath. In his first postseason, Wembanyama averaged 26 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks against the Knicks, with the Knicks scoring like a bottom-third offense when he was on the floor. Game 5: 19 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks. Afterward, Charles Barkley called him out for skipping the traditional post-Finals congratulations — then Wemby and Julian Champagnie quietly spent the next day visiting kids at a San Antonio hospital, handing out signed jerseys. The kid gets it.

The 2014 beautiful game. The last banner came the pretty way: the 2014 Spurs dismantled Miami’s superteam with the most gorgeous ball movement the Finals have ever seen — 25.2 assists per game, a 4-1 gentleman’s sweep. Duncan’s fifth ring, Kawhi’s Finals MVP at 22. This new core grew up watching it; now they’re trying to start their own era.

This Season (2026-27): Finish the Job

Vegas set the win total at 59.5 (BetMGM) to 60.5 (FanDuel), with the Spurs among the title favorites. The formula: Wembanyama ascending to MVP, a three-guard starting lineup of Fox, Castle and Harper that posted elite net ratings in every pairing, Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson off the bench, and Tobias Harris filling the one hole. The question is the backcourt squeeze — Harper needs more than the 22.6 minutes he got as a rookie, and Fox’s fit is the season’s biggest storyline. Anything short of the Western Conference Finals would be a disappointment.

2. Dallas Mavericks — The Texas war. Same state, same division, genuine dislike. Three meetings before Christmas (October 24 in Dallas, November 4 in San Antonio).

3. New York Knicks — The Finals wound. They took the trophy in five games. The Christmas Day game at the Garden is the most anticipated regular-season date on the calendar.

4. Los Angeles Lakers — The old blood feud. The 2000s wars never really ended, and the November 27 NBA Cup meeting adds stakes.
