The Club
The Oklahoma City Thunder are the NBA’s model franchise. Established in 2008 when the franchise moved from Seattle (where, as the SuperSonics, it won the 1979 NBA title), the Thunder play at Paycom Center in blue, orange and navy — and they are the 2025 NBA champions, the first title in Oklahoma City history. Built by general manager Sam Presti through patience and the draft, this is a young, homegrown juggernaut that took the league by storm. The mantra is simple: Thunder Up.
Last Season (2025-26): The Title Defense Falls One Game Short
It was one of the most statistically dominant seasons in NBA history. The Thunder opened 24-1 — tying the 2015-16 Warriors for the best 25-game start ever — ripped off a franchise-record 16-game win streak, and finished 64-18: the best record in the West, the No. 1 defense (107.7 rating) and the No. 1 net rating (+11.1) in the league. They swept Phoenix and the Lakers in the first two playoff rounds. Then the injuries and the Spurs arrived: with Jalen Williams (hamstring, 49 games missed) and Ajay Mitchell (calf) sidelined, Oklahoma City fell to Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs 3-4 in the Western Conference Finals, losing Game 7 at home 111-103. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won his second straight MVP (31.1 points, 55.3% shooting) and dropped 35 points in the Game 7 defeat. The Spurs went on to lose the Finals to the Knicks. So close — and now it’s personal.
Best Players Right Now (2026-27 Roster)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, 28, Guard (#2) — The two-time reigning MVP. 31.1 points a night on 55.3% shooting last season, the league’s most unstoppable scorer — and now bidding to become the first player to win three straight MVPs since Larry Bird (1984-86).
Jalen Williams, 25, Guard/Forward (#8) — The co-star is back. A recurring hamstring limited him to 33 games last season, but a healthy J-Dub changes everything — and the front office just committed five years and over $239 million to him.
Chet Holmgren, 24, Forward/Center (#7) — The unicorn. Also signed a five-year max extension north of $239 million. He’ll want Game 7 of the Spurs series (4 points) forgotten by opening night.
Isaiah Hartenstein, 28, Center (#55) — The glass cleaner. Led the team at 9.4 rebounds a night; the muscle in the middle.
Cason Wallace, 22, Guard (#22) — The new fifth starter. All-Defensive second team last season and the NBA’s steals leader (150). Dort’s departure opens the door for him.
Alex Caruso, 32, Guard (#9) — The veteran defensive ace; championship experience and chaos creation off the bench.
Ajay Mitchell, 24, Guard (#25) — The likely sixth man. His calf injury cost him the playoffs; his return is a quiet offseason win.
Jaylin Williams, 24, Forward/Center (#6) — Fan favorite big with range and toughness.
Jared McCain, 22, Guard (#20) — The young scorer in the second unit.
Kenrich Williams, 31, Guard/Forward (#34) — The do-everything veteran who may play more minutes this season.
Aday Mara, Rookie, Center — The 7-foot-3 rookie turning heads in preseason — fans already call him the “Wemby stopper.”
Head coach: Mark Daigneault — Seventh season. The 2024 Coach of the Year must now solve the rotation puzzle left by the summer’s cost-cutting trades.

Star Spotlight: Stories You Should Know
The 2025 title run. A year ago, the Thunder broke through: 68 wins, then a Finals win over the Indiana Pacers in seven games — the first championship in Oklahoma City history. SGA was Finals MVP on top of his league MVP, and the celebration outside Paycom Center is the stuff of legend.
The 2012 dream team that wasn’t. Before the dynasty talk, there was the young Thunder of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden — three future MVPs who reached the 2012 Finals together and lost to LeBron’s Heat. The franchise traded Harden away that summer, and the trio never got another shot. It’s the great “what if” in Thunder lore — and a cautionary tale Presti still hears about.
SGA’s MVP chase — and the business summer. No player has won three straight MVPs since Larry Bird in the mid-1980s; SGA enters 2026-27 as the favorite to join that club. But the summer stung: to dodge the second apron after maxing Holmgren and Williams, Presti traded starter Lu Dort and key reserves Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe. “It’s the business of the NBA,” SGA said of his departed brothers. The question: does the leaner roster still have enough around the two-time MVP?
This Season (2026-27): Revenge Tour
Vegas gave the Thunder the league’s highest win total at 62.5 and co-favorites for the 2027 title (+260, alongside the Spurs). The ceiling is another 60-win season — Oklahoma City has won 68 and 64 games the last two years — but the rotation is thinner than it’s been since the rebuild ended, and Daigneault will manage minutes with June in mind. If Williams stays healthy and Wallace fills the Dort hole, the Thunder are the team to beat out West. If not, the Spurs are waiting.

Biggest Rivalries — The Wars
1. San Antonio Spurs — THE new blood feud. The Spurs ended OKC’s title defense in Game 7 and then reached the Finals. Wemby (27.3/10.9/2.7 in the series) is the obstacle standing between the Thunder and everything. October 20. Be ready.
2. Denver Nuggets — The Northwest war. Two contenders, one division, years of playoff-adjacent tension. The home opener says it all.
3. Minnesota Timberwolves — The division grudge. The Wolves knocked Denver out twice and now have LaMelo. The Cup game on November 25 will be loud.
4. Los Angeles Lakers — The sweep. OKC swept them 4-0 in round two last spring — and Luka Doncic doesn’t forget sweeps.
